I would have to disagree when it comes to forums being a place to make money. The only type of website that can really benefit from marketing in forums, let alone get away with it, is directories. I see a lot of new directories announcing their launch in forums. I also use forums to find new directories to submit my website to.

Somehow this has not been overly abused yet by directories. I think this may be due to the fact that most people build informational websites and not directories.
