Actually, that is incorrect: although most monitor resolutions are
now set to wider screen displays (as a direct result of widescreen and larger monitors becoming more available to Users due to dropping prices and retail promotability), the W2C and W3C Standards are still 762, 870, and 970 pixels wide in order to offer the greatest universiality of viewability to a global audience. Websites themselves are increasingly formatted using a greater ability to 'stretch' and fill screens, but they still are formatted to default to displaying to these settings nonetheless.
You may verify this simply by examining the newest breed templates intended for eCommerce and CMS websites, as even they do not deviate from this design standard --- they are careful to comply so their products can remain desirable as an "acceptable" unilaterally applicable product.
