Default Using Check Disk

This is an IBM laptop R40 2227 with XP Pro and SP2 (with SP 3 added). The processes seem unnecessarily involved, and one problem is using Check Disk. Scan Disk was so easy on my last computer, but I've checked the IBM site re using Check Disk and can't find that. Does anyone know the steps?
