Setting up a Forum for my site

I may have missed this thread somewhere, but I am interested in setting up a forum for my web site and have gone through the tutorials and have a fair understanding of the process but I have a couple of questions for anyone who has recently set one up.

1) Is the forum installed within the design of my web site or is it a stand alone page as a sub-domain with a link from within my site/

2) Is it better to purchase a template for approx. US$50

the forum is independent of your site, but there's a way to have it in your site. Go here and click on forum
