How do I change navigation buttons from the plain gray ones to something else?

If you are using the button from the first icon at the top of the builder, you can't. You might want to use one of the other button choices on the left side of the builder page, these you can customize through the properties of the button. Play around with the different choices until you find one you like.

Ok, I don't know how to do that. As in, which of those selections would provide a navigation button?

Look on the left side of the page builder, slowly run your mouse down the different icons. Towards the bottom of the list you'll find a glass button and other choices below that. Click on one, when it is on your page double click it and you'll open the properties box, click the style tab and you will see all the chioces to choose from.
