    Default guestbook question

    Hi, Friends,

    I need your help.
I was trying to set up a guestbook on my site. I watched the video tutorial, and think it may go like the following.
    1) Edit the guestbook (I added the 'php' extention to the file.
    2) Publish it by clicking the 'publish' button in the tool bar of BlueVode.
    3) Upload the file on the server using BlueFTP
    4) Change the permissions of the file to 777.

But the problem is that when i was trying to publish the file via the publish button of BlueVode, an error occured and my BlueVode was completly closed up. I tried several times, and the same result.

Could you please indicate me what mistakes I may have made?

    Thanks,
    Shirley

Hi Shirley, I have reviewed the video AND noted the extra instructions below the video box...............

I never saw anywhere that you had to publish anything............ftp is in bold letters, so I guess you dont have to publish, just upload and change the 777 thingy................

    Question Re: problem with guestbook

I wish to load the guest book too but I am further behind than you.
    I read these but....
    Extra instructions:
    1.
Upload 'guestbookdb.php' on your server using BlueFTP.
    2. Change the permissions of 'guestbookdb.php' to 777 otherwise you won't be able to write data.

You can use the FTP Manager add-on (BlueFTP) to upload and change permissions of the 'guestbookdb.php' file.
    a) Login to the FTP server of your website using the BlueFTP.
    b) Browse to the folder where you've published the guestbook.
    c) Upload 'guestbookdb.php'
    d) Select the file and use Properties to set the permissions to 777
You only have to do this once.

Trouble is I dont think I understand the instructions. What exactly is guestbookdb.php how is this different from the page I wish to publish it on?? When they say folder you published it to do they refer to the page it is on? I think this is too hard for me.

Hi, unless there has been a change in the instructions? it actually dosnt tell you to create a page called guestbookdb.php . This is why so many posts ask where the (guestbookdb.php) file is.
you have to create this yourself with either BV or just pop into the same area/folder in your cpannel & create the file & call it guestbookdb.php

    Good luck.

Also the permission is now 755 not 777 as stated in the video. And when Chris said call it guestbook.php, he meant save the page as guestbook, it will automaically publish as a php but when you link it remember to add the extention, not html. Also enable the capcha or you will get a lot of spam.

    Hi, collectors-info,

following the instruction, I uploaded the file with BlueFTP, and changed the permissions to 777. But the page still won't display on the internet.

    What else should i do?

    Thanks,

    Shirley

    Hi, Collectors-info,

Here is my page url: http://www.borderless-japan.net/

It is a newly opened site. I plan to make it trilingual. Right now it is just in Japanese and just have a few pages.

    Thanks,

There should be a page on your site called http://www.borderless-japan.net/guestbook.php & there is no link. Have you published it to another directory?
This will be there if you have published the guest book. I am not sure if it will work with an upload as BV rely's on other files to make some things work.
Also if you do make a file in the cpanel, it is to be named guestbook.php not just guestbook.

This is where the problem is. I tried to publish the guestbookdb.php file like I did with other pages. But that just closed up my BlueVode web builder. Then I uploaded the file to the publick.html folder with BlueFTP and changed the permissions to 777. But neither got my guestbookdb.php published.

    I am lost.

    Thank you.

There must be something odd with your machine??? But the guest book needs 4 files in total including the captcha to work. This can only be done by publishing.

    Hi,

You mentioned guestbook needs 4 files to work. What are they? Can they be published by just clicking the 'publish' button on Bluevode?

    Thanks,

    Shirley

by the way, when editing the a page with guestbook, can the file be only named as 'guestbook.php'. Supposed I name the file as 'friend.php', should I make changes in the properties (Advanced)'? like, change the default Text filename './guestbookdb.php' to'./frienddb.php'?

There were no problem when I published my other pages. But if publishing the guestbook page, the Bluevode was closed up. Is that because I made some mistakes when editing the guestbook?

    Thanks

Hi, i wouldn't change file names until you have got it working the normal way.
I cant find a guest book page on the link you left me.http://www.borderless-japan.net/
    It should be http://www.borderless-japan.net/guestbook.php
Also have you changed the page to .php under the page properties.??
