i want to add a counter to my index page so i know how many people have visited it how do i go about this

You will find a free counter here - http://www.free-counter.com/
- there are stack of free counters on the net.

But - personally, I think it looks far more professional not to have a counter. (personal opinion)

You can find out how many visitors have been to your site, and where they came from (country, browser, link etc) from your c panel.

Log into C panel and look under 'Awstats' - then click on your domain name to see all the stats.

You can also use Google Analytics. it provides you with accurate stats on your site traffic.
