adding symbols problems

I had inserted a square symbol in between a name and lines of address on my webpage. Today, they suddenly turned to question marks!! When I went to fix them (following all instructions on tutorial) they always come out a different symbol. For instance, a big black dot came out an "n".

What is going on???
