Question Meta tags on every page?

Should you put meta tags on every page of your site? And if so should they be different on each page?

I have been using them but not changing them.

Yes but make sure that each pages meta tags are relevant to that page. The SEs don't like non-relevant tags. Try to use only words that appear on each particular page. I think that's right but Bethers is the real expert on all the SE stuff.

You got that 100% right, Amanda. Yes, especially to the page description - it's really important - and make it concise with what THAT page is about - same as the page title should be a good one for that page - and not just saying home for the home page and toys for a toy page, etc.

Is there a limit to the number of tags that you should have? Does the search engine even care?

Yes they do care. To have too many is a bad thing. I go for around 20 - 30 tops.

Amanda,

This may be a stupid question, but 20 - 30 tops per site? Thank you! I was just taking a break and going through old posts and was curious. Wow! What an amazing treasury of tips and how-tos.

Thank you!

Per Page!

Yes, it is, and well spotted. There is an awful lot of experience built into these pages. It will, one day I'm sure, become a National Monument. Lol. I've been around for less than a year and I found enough to help me get started without having to ask more than a couple of questions and there wasn't anywhere close to what there is now! I was shy though! Lol.

Welcome to the fold and happy website building!

Red face Re: Meta tags on every page?

Hi Amanda,
I think I really need your help.
I did as you suggested. As for title I used a short one and releted to my web, for page description I used less then 25 words and they are the ones I used in my web for the releted page, for keywords I followed the Bluevoda suggestions and add some more ( 3 or 4), but still I cannot see my web in any search engine.
Please help. My web is www.mediterraneotanzania.com

Hi Alas
Once your website is up and published, it can take quite some time for it to be indexed by the search engines. The process will be speeded up by you doing various things - about which you can read heaps of advice, by Bethers and others, in the Search Engine Forum. You are waiting for 'bots' or spiders to visit your site. You can tell when these have visited as the will show up in your AWSTATS (viewable through CP).

As a VH customer you are also entitled to a once only submission of your site to the major search engines by VH. You need to submit a soupport ticket for this.

Take a look at the Search Engine Forum - you'll learn heaps. Please be aware though that it cantake weeks and weeks for your to be 'found' by the SEs.

Your site comes up as No 1 on google
BUT only if you type in "mediterraneo dar es salaam"

If people do not know the name of your hotel/restaurant, how can they find you ?

Reposition the name in your Title and description tags

.ie. Hotel mediterraneo etc
or Luxury Hotel etc

type in google: hotel dar es salaam

to see what I mean..............................

To expound on the number of meta tag keywords - since you should ONLY be using keywords you have on the page - you would be hard pressed in most instances to have even 20-30. Now, the other end of that is on product pages, where I have each product name listed - but, you'll all see soon that I'm moving over a pinata store - I do NOT use the word pinata each time - so on the animal pinata page, I might have keywords like:
pinata, animal pinata, pinatas, dog, donkey, burro - etc - don't spam it with your major word - that will hurt you.

Also, except for product pages like this - you really shouldn't be trying to optimize more than 2-5 keyword phrases per page.

Hi,
We will have a links page on our site that is run by a program that we installed. Each page will have about 20 links to other sites. But when someone enters a new link the program asks for key words related to that particular link. If every one enters 10 key words related to their site & times this by 20 do you think search engines might not like this? As this will mean I will have a couple of hundred key words on every page. Or are these types of programs optimised in some way to cope with this sort of thing.

Thanks,

Chris.

unless the program inserts relevant text to each link then the S:E´s might
read those pages as being a link farm and therefore could hurt your ratings..

Another thought is that some of the links posted to your site might also be damaging to your link reputation.......be careful with, and choose your links well.

Thanks David,
The key words are related to each individual link & any links that get posted have to be approved by us 1st.

Earlier in this thread someone was talking about tracking stats in your

AWSTATS (viewable through CP).

What is this? I am looking for a way to track the traffic to my site and so far I am not sure how. Can someone please tell me what the above term means?

Thanks

Yvonne, if you go into your control panel, you'll see an icon that says stats - I believe it's the 4th down in the left column of icons - and probably says more than stats - but look for stats - that's where you'll find them.
