User accounts please help

Is it possible to have a facility for users to set up login accounts, so that they can only access certain pages which other unregistered users cannot access?
If so, could someone be kind to give me a succinct brief.

Actually I was just funing with ya on the succinct part.

If you have a few users- then create a folder on your server or subdomain if you like, and password protect it. The put what ever you wish only those users to be able to access. You could create a folder for each user (if you only had a hand full of users) and individually password protect each folder to each user.

It you want new users to be able to create auto-create a user name and password- then you will need to use a script to do so and it would attach to a data base.
