Extracting .zip on file manager URGENT

Im trying to update my smf forum. So i went to cpanel then filemanager. Then my forum directory. I went to upload file, desktop. then the update zip for SMF. After uplaoding i hit extract on the right side after selecting the zip. A new window popped up showing all the files extracted. I went back to filemanager and nothign seemed to change! What do I do! Also, i tried a new installation it works and when i access the install.php, fill out the info. I ALWAYS get an error message saying:
The installer was unable to access the "smf" database. With some hosts, you have to create the database in your administration panel before SMF can use it. Some also add prefixes - like your username - to your database names.
