Phil, you'd be wise to follow the procedure in the thread near the top of this forum topic ..... this one

Scanning text means you end up with an image. Images create large files. You can convert scans to text with OCR software. If you are talking long documents, then you are best using FREE software to convert to PDF file and create pages on your site with them. i.e. FTP them to your server.
Plenty of info already on this board if you use the search facility.
