New computer; BV nightmare

My site http://www.jamesbartondesign.com has been up and running for a year or so on BV. I have done some things recently that have caused serious problems.

1). I have transferred BV to a new PC. The BV pages on my new PC lacked images because the upper regions of the file paths had changed (from C:\ Documents and Settings\James Barton\My Documents\ Blue Voda\etc........, to c:\Users\James\ Documents\BlueVoda\etc.......). I have made a start on changing the filepaths to reinstating the images on my BV pages on my PC.

2). I installed BV 10 at this stage

3). I restored the images to my index page. Serious problems ; the navigation links are now not live and I can do nothing to rectify this

4). I loaded the oldest back-up of my index page and previewed it in my browser: the hand appeared over the navigation links indicating they were live, so I published the page: the links were not live! I tested again in the browser and they no longer appeared as live.

5). I went to my control panel and looked at the files in my public html. There is an index page and an index-01 page. I cannot remove index-01 to the trash can. I suspect there is some kind of conflict here.

Any help to resolve this serious problem would be really appreciated because I now have a site that cannot be navigated. I have checked and rechecked the navigation links and can not see any errors (does'nt mean there are none). Could there be a conflict between BV10 and earlier versions? Finally I hope I have started this thread in the right forum. Apologies if not.

There is no conflict between BV9 and 10. However, i don't see a menubar in your pages, I see a Rollover which you probably intended to use as menubar ? In your privacy page, the link ARE working because they are linked, in your home page they are not.
Links are also working in the Contact, in the Purchasing, in the Commisions and in the Products page. It is just the Home and About us pages that have the problem.So i can only suppose hat there has been some mistake with those two pages, on your end.

Hi Naval,

Thanks for taking time to look at my problem. Moved on a bit!

1. I transferred the backed up files that had been on old pc (both my site files and bv builder 9.1. When I checked my backed up index page by previewing in browser no sign of my main page navigation at all.

2. I then loaded all main navigation images, including rollovers, onto the backed-up index page. This meant changing the higher reaches of the file paths. On preview in browser the "hand" appeared (this is beginning to sound like something out of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table).Great, so I published: the hand was there and the navigation worked, but only for about 30 seconds. Load the site again and it becomes apparent that as soon as one goes back to either the index page or the About Us page then the navigation totally freezes up. These were the pages I republished from my new PC.

I cannot for the life of me work out where I have gone wrong.I have checked the links scores of times and they appear to be fine.

I'm not an expert on HTML by any means however when comparing the source code between your index and products page I do not see any links corresponding to your menu bar on the index page source code. There are links in the code on the product page.
Why not use the products page as a template seeing as all the links work and re-do your index page and any other that are having problems?

Yes, that is my next move. When comparing the source code of both pages it is screamingly obvious. I have tried to copy the code differences into the index page html but bv won't let me put the code changes where I want to. I say "won't but it is probable that I cannot figure a way to do it. I used your site map to move around....looks to me like you forgot to copy/paste a properly configured Menu page-to-page!
(remember: whenever you "re-publish" a transferred or backed up file, all hyperstyles are lost, if the heirarcial page evolution is broken --- in other words, if you cloned all your pages from the index, your "new" index probably lost it's styles, and thus all subsequent pages will also. Only your "last" published page will have nav embedded) Also, given this is all done using pre-BV10

Hello Vasili,
Why do I feel so apprehensive bringing my problem to the expert! Thank you for identifying what I instinctivly feel is the nub of the problem. How should I go about correcting this? I tried to enter the right javascript (?) into the page html but couldn't locate it in the correct places inside the body tag. I have used dreamweaver before where altering code is a simple affair. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I really am not sure why all this problem. Copy the rollovers from one of the working pages or simply recreate them.
If you copy / paste, simply edit as required (because i see that your rollover menus are different from paga to page)

Rollovers don't have any related style, so i don't even understand the remark about hyperlink styles. And, there is NO menu. The rollovers have been used to create a navigation menu

Simply double click, one at a time, your rollovers. When the dialog box appears, simply click on the "Link" button and provide the correct link for each rollover. At the end Save and republish.

Unless i missed something....

My thinking is that i have to replicate this code around each navigation button (substituting the words index, commissions, products etc. in the appropriate places). In simple terms (it has to be!) how can I do this. It does not work to simply clone the navigation buttons from, say, my commissions page. When I preview in the browser window it seems OK, but when I publish the navigation does not work from my index page. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I wonder why you are analyzing the code !!

Bv will create the rollover for you, with the images you tell it to use, and will create the code correctly, IF you link the rollover to a whatever page!
Why are getting confused with code to copy / paste or modify???

Just use the BV built in tool for rollovers!
