Most of the time you wont use the others. FTP is for linking one to an ftp server login.. Ive NEVER used the gopher one.. so no idea where you would use it.. but if you google it.. im sure you can find out.

Thanks, Karen you are a star but what does one put in the box for a file?
Alistair
What box and what file? If you wanted someone to ftp your site.. then youd put your site domain name / the folder
ftp://yoursite.com/downloads/
then they could download whatever was there... but.. they will also need a user and password.

PS: by the way I googled 'gopher as you suggested and got the info from 'navaldesign'. He advises that gopher is an old protocol for http.
