Publishing pages

Can you publish pages as you go? If you have published a page, can you still make changes to that page and then re-publish?

I went on the internet and typed in the website address - when it came up an "Index of" page came up with a list of pages that I published and also pictures that I have used and a few other things; how do I take the pages off that don't belong there and/or how do I do a "website under construction" page?
Can I un-publish a page?

Rename the page as index (got to be all lower case) save & re-publish.
