Default Need some advice regarding linking to large .pdfs

I have linked to pdf's lots of times which isn't a problem because they are generally quite small.

I am helping a guy out here where he has a site where you can download comics - you may have seen his site.

The problem is these comic files pdfs are massive ranging from anywhere between 10mb and 42mb. It seems anything up to 20mb will link and open fine - although a bit slow. The 42mb one, the internet or browser refuses to open it. It shows a page not found. I know its their because I personally uploaded it.

Rather than link directly to a pdf, I have seen before where you can download something, a dialogue box will open give you the option to open the file or save it. Can someone help me and explain how I do this as I think it will lend itself better to these huge pdfs.

    Thanks in advance

Only an idea. But have you thought of placing them in a zip folder for download. Not sure how much a pdf would get reduced in a zip file.

Do you know what chris....I have never ever created a Zip folder....lol

I think a zip folder will be a good idea because although it won't speed things up, at least the visitor will know something is happening.

How do I do it then please Chris?

    Thanks

My Documents>Right click on a pdf file>send to>compressed zip folder. If you don't have zip on your windows, there are lots of freebie zip programs on the net.
This will only reduce a pdf by around 20-25% as i believe pdf's are a form of image & don't compress as well as software scripts & text.

    Thanks Chris

Do I simply then drag the zip folder across via Blueftp and Bob's your uncle?

You should also be able to have several zipped files in on folder. IE: Batman all in one folder, & so on.
