Default accessing an ftp account

I set up a new ftp account after watching the tutorial but I can't access it. I can access my main account ftp://ftp.thewashingtonword.com. . .but I cannot access the new account ftp://ftp.alcmaterial@thewashingtonword.com. ..it won't let me logon. . ..

How do I access the new account? what is the proper address and procedure to access that folder? I've watched the tutorial but it doesn't explain how to actually logon to the account. What would I tell someone who wanted to download a file from that folder?

I want to set up a folder (alcmaterials) that i can upload to and have clients download from. I don't want them to go to my main account however. I want to set up the one folder with a separate username and password for downloads. . . how does that work. . .what am I missing here? Isn't that what a "new account" is for?

The host will be the same as you use for your main account, but instead of using your cpanel username use alcmaterial@thewashingtonword.com as well as the password you assigned it

Default Re: accessing an ftp account

Am i misusing the purpose for ftp? I was thinking others could download files in a separate account with separate password. . .but PERMISSION DENIED. . .only I seem to be able to get access to alcmaterial@thewashingtonword.com. ..I don't get it. . .what is the purpose of setting up an ftp account if no one else can get access to download files. . .and what is this about not using ftp for "storage". ..what is it for. . .I'm not storing files. . .I want to make files available for others to download. . .Is that permissible? When I give the host, username and password to someone they can't get to the file. . .I'm stumped and they just dumped my question but this is a different issue than the original question. . .my original question on this thread is solved. .I have a new issue. . .but they just dumped my question. . .great. . .so I'm sure this will sit forever and never be answered. .. .why couldn't Mr. Man help me instead of just dumping my question??

FTP's are mainly used to get the files onto the website, and you usually use the website for the users to download. Some websites use what is called anonymous FTP to allow users to download the files using FTP, mainly because it can provide a faster transfer, and you have more direct access to the files. Anon. FTP might be against VH terms of service, you'll have to check that out, but as far as offering files for download that shouldn't be a problem (As long as your site isn't solely meant for the transfer of files)

Now onto your problem...

Chances are you are limiting the account to only have access to a certain directory when you create it. THe FTP account you mentioned probably has global access to your files and you are placing them in a directory that other accounts you create don't have access to. I would recommend making a directory on your site.. ie. "http://thewashingtonword.com/files", and then for all of the accounts limit the access to the "/public_html/files" directory. This will prevent the users from accessing all of the files on your site, and only allowing them to access the one in the "files" directory. Also note, when you give people access they can add and delete files... so make sure you have backups incase someone accidently deletes a file.
