Smile Your opinion would be much appreciated!

    Hi,

Thanks to VodaHost, I've managed to create my first website ... still work in progress ... but any opinion would be valuable to me. My website is http://www.soolondonhouse.com

Been to most forums and found lots of stuff too technical (hence, challenging) at the moment. Need to keep reading and hopefully be able to abstract the 'right' -the most relevant (to me)- information so that I can put things in order very soon.

    Thanks again.

firstly you ned to cenralise it, then i realy like the cooulor scheme but the red is a bit too bright when the other text is so soft and nice and pleasing

as for the nav bar, cant you just have all the links on all the pes of the nav bar? it got a bit confusing to me and thats cos im a bit thick, as on one page it has 6 buttons the first being home at the top of the home page? dont need that, second on about us only 3????? as for the rest its cool and very good well done

You have made a good start but like most new websites, it needs more work.
Below are just a few pointers.....I am sure you will get some more feedback
    later.
    Home page:
Tea and coffee available text is being cut off
(add an extra blank line after available)

The rectangle behind your menu bar needs to be moved down a little
as its covering up your horizontal image.

Use this free pic-resizer to cut down the No of Kbytes for your photos:
    http://www.vodahost.com/pix.htm

I might just avail myself of 1 of your flats the next time I visit my home town.

    have fun.............

Can I sell you some tea?

Nice site, clean and colors are relaxing.
I noticed that the "Where do you live poll" opens to "where are you now" and when i tried the latter I got "can't vote again"

While yellow and red are outstanding advertising combinations, yellow text is usually hard to read and having a red background doesn't always work.

Ditto the other comments by David and AllStar.

    Soo,
Looks good and is easy to get around. Informtion seems complete. I would drop the page a little with a bar above the photos. just to make them look less squashed?
Also on your home page the sentence should run "Like a home away FROM home."
If I am down your way I'll book your place.
    well done,

Thanks a lot. Seems a lot better now. What do you think?^^
'...have all the links on all the pes of the nav bar?' --> did I get it right? Not quite sure...

I selected 'Center in Browser' in Page Properties for all the pages but still not in the center - thought it is just my laptop. 'Black' background only on the side (both) is my preference but for some reason it won't work. - still see black background below the page. Would you know how I can achieve this?

    Thanks again!

Hmm... double-checked it. Don't see the text being cut off though _-_ Shall I wait for more feedback on this??? Do you think everyone but me can see it?

The image being covered up, I will have to have a look at it again - used pic-resizer for all the photos already _-_

Ok, I will re-visit your website later to check the price. It would be nice.
Need to find out the reason for the trouble on that poll links. Phew..
Made a few changes re. text colours thanks to your advice.

    Hi, Mark
Thank you. The sentence now corrected!
The photos seem causing the trouble the most. Will have a look at it later.

    Okay...
'a browser thing' means it depends on individual's browser? I want everyone to see my website with same background, that is, centred. Is it not possible?
Fiting in won't be a problem but not getting things the way I want is daunting and frustrating _-_

Don't worry...it's just probably a little off and need some fine tuning and everybody will soon see the same thing...

Yeah some browsers will show things differently..for example on IE...I noticed some of my links are sort of off...trying to fix that so all appears same...it's all a matter of fine tuning....but u'll get it ...we'll help you along... :)

The site is very nice. It is clean and easy to get around and the colors go well with each other. I did not like the yellow hi-lites. The other thing is, if you are ever expecting American,Canadian and who know what other nationalities on business stays, the first floor is the ground floor. I believe that is right. At least it was odd sounding to me. No big deal I'm sure most americans will finally figure it out.
You have a great idea and a site coming along great.

Looking very nice. I love the simplicity of it all and like the others, the color combinations. I will watch as you progress with your photos. Choco777 mentioned ground and 1st being the same. I don't know about others, but here in Colorado, USA, the ground floor is in the ground to some degree and the 1st floor is on the ground. If floor is completely underground it's a basement. But hey, I don't think it makes a big difference. I think most people where ever they are from would know. Keep up the great work!

The yellow hi-lites now changed - like it better?^^
A fair point re. the floor. A few guests from America and Canada metioned it already - didn't seem to confuse them though. In fact, they know about London much more than me (and I am supposed to be a londoner)
    Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

All the points made here re.my website were very helpful. Thanks again.

What David pointed out 'The rectangle behind your menu bar needs to be moved down a little as its covering up your horizontal image', if I'm not mistaken, it is due to the selected template. My lazy solution - covered the black line with the photo. Didn't want to change the template and do it all over again.

On the booking enquiries page, I sent a test enquiry twice but nothing came through. From my Outlook Express, I can send the email though so Outlook Express is in function. Can I pick anyone's brain here?

Oh, I want to insert 'date format' in website. But how???

    Thanks again.

p.s. Is it all right to carry on posting questions here or should I go to other forum? I am trying to look up the relevant section and read more (but with headache!)

There's too many replies on here for me to go through them all so hopefully I won't mention what someone aleady has...

You MUST change your page titles. This is the first thing the search engines pick up on. So "Home Page" "About Us" etc etc means nothing to them. Not sure what your website is about but whatever it is get that in the page title. So... If you sell "Herbal flavoured dog collars" then title your page "Herbal flavoured dog collars" etc.... Otherwise good attempt for first site, you will pick up on the rest of it as time goes by, I think I rebuilt my first ever website about 10 times before I liked it!

By the way... "Herbal flavoured dog collars" ????? I think I might have hit on a new business idea!! Anyone want to lend me a few thousand to get started?

Hmm.. now I'm worried. Thought my website is quite clear. If it fails to deliver the message out (even to one person), it is not good enough really.

Regarding to search engines, isn't it what the words in Meta tags are for rather than the page title? That's what I understood from the tutorial. Well, mine still not appearing in search engine anyway _-_ need to work on it.

Ok, first of all, I wasn't confused by what your site was about, I just didn't look at that, sorry I have a lot of work on!!

But as far as the page titles go YES it does matter, keywords are important too you are right, but page titles just as much, please trust me on this, I guarantee you that will make a huge difference

With ref to your question above, why not download the free secure contact page from: http://bluevodaforms.com/

And yes Page TITLES are important.......
You should always try to use your page title in your TITLE meta tag..

Your site is really coming on.............keep it up.

    Hi, David
Thanks for your advice. Purely because of the effore I put into, I've decided to stick to the form I created. ^^

Wondering whether anyone can help me with the issues re.Outlook Express - read the relevant forums but still couldn't get it sorted.

    1. Sent test emails from my enquiry page using hotmail --> results: not getting them on Outlook Express - getting auto-responders to my hotmail works fine, though.

No problem with sending emails from Outlook Express to hotmail.

    2. can anyone direct me to the most relevant and effective forums re. optimising the website in search engine?

    Thanks.

    Thanks again David.
Yes, I do have hotmail but thought Outlook Express would be handy.
There should be some simple reason why I am not getting emails through Outlook Express (when sending ok plus auto-responding and Horde fine, too). Followed lots of threads on this and quite sure I did all I could.

    Hi..

Firstly, before I go into the 'Under Construction' issue, let me make a suggestion.

The header 'Soolondon house' in pink might need to be moved right a few pixels so that it fits inside the grey rectangle.

Now, lets see the 'Under Construction problem'..

Your website seems to be working fine here. Your visitors may be experiencing that problem because you might have had your site index page as 'Under Construction' for some time, so when they perform a search, the old page description might still be displayed by search results. This is because it may take up to a few days before search engines update. I guess, the question is whether your visitors are actually clicking on the link http:soolondonhouse.com.
Also, it may be a good idea to ensure that you've uploaded your pages onto the server under the correct names so that the links take your visitors to the right pages.. For example, you might have left the under construction page, or any other old page on the server and your visitors may be seing that page.
If all of that seems to be faultless, I would suggest that your visitors tray again shortly. I've heard that in some regions pages are not updated immediately.. even though, technically, this sounds like foolish thing to say, I should not discount it.

Hi soo, your site looks OK from here so I have included it in the
    SHOWCASE OF BLUEVODA WEBSITES.

You can see the result at:
    http://www.bluevodaforms.com/bvwebsites.html
If you like it you can then go to:
http://bluevodaforms.com/showcase/ click on "user control panel"
and enter your site which will then appear in the "Index of websites"

    have fun

Your website is taking forever to open and I have broadband. this could be the black background. Other pages are white, consider changing it to white.
The headline is off centered - so it begins over the street photo. I don't think this was intentional was it?
The second and third pics seem squashed ? Pixresizer is a better tool than manually resizing.

    Thanks, Carlos.
Well said for an amateur like me.
Every time I made changes, I deleted the old page after the new one created and saved the new page using the same page name as the deleted one. Guess the server doesn't hold the old page, right? I mean, after the updates on the server.
Still some people say the page loading is very slow and some pages are not working well.. _-_
Hopefully it should be well tuned given time.
    Thanks again.

Yes, you are not the first person talking about the slow loading.

All pages' background should be black.
How come you see the white background???

    Hi,
Loads much faster now, might have been your photos.
I now see black background on every page, looks very elegant.

Will have to bookmark it for a future trip to the UK.

Afterthought: you might include a location map (I read where you're at but couldn't remember the area) and a link to the tube map http://www.tfl.gov.uk/tube/maps/

    Hi, Bill.
For some reason, I thought you are in UK. ^^
I should've kept the cigar from my cuban guests.
I said 'no thanks to her' as a non smoker but it looks coooool on you.
    Yes, do come along.
I might have a special rate for vodahost members. ^^

As to the location map, on the page here http://www.soolondonhouse.com/location.html
inside small yellow circle, 'click tube map' is a link to the tube map
plus I have street map next to it. Is it too small to notice?
Actually, I want to have a tube map indicating or circling the exact station in red
(have seen them somewhere and it's really good!) but don't know how to do this myself. _-_

    Thanks for your attention again.
    Have a nice weekend.

Thank you, I will accept the good intentions for the cigar.

For the map: select the portion of the map you want (can be a square with Hammersmith in the lower half) use the Adobe Snapshot Tool on the menu and it will be automatically copied to Clipboard.

Now open your MSN Paint and paste, draw a circle around Hammersmith and save as *.gif. Voila you have your exact location. You can now create a link to the detailed map.

Lovely city London. Have a good weekend too.

With all the comments, I am feeling guilty to say anything about this good looking site. BUT! A few small things.
    • The background image on your front page has a link that directs you to a 404 page. Google may not like this.
    • Your link to a map maybe better to a Google map as they have really improved there maps & the way you can use them.
    • On your contact page, it would be nicer to have a drop down list insted of a scroll down for where did you find us, as the one you have, all the answers are hidden.

    Good luck

    Chris.
PS. it going to get cooler. I hope.

No! Your comments are great (=all valid points).
There should be always a room for improvement.
    I truely appreciate them.

Only I didn't change the map this time.
Google map looks wider than streetmap, which means
people need to move around the map more with Google
in order to see the nearby - a few - tube stations.
when on the Streetmap they are just one click away.
    It's just my opinion
and I am going to get some of my guests' feedback on this...

Yes, it's much cooler today and it is going to stay that way
or even cooler for the rest of the week, that is, if BBC is right.

    Thanks again and nice weekend!

Very good over all. very organized and very very informative. Like the curancy converter and availability page, I do think you would add to the eye appeal if you extended the title bar across the whole page and moved every thing down a bit to allow the photo on top not to be scrunched.
also the chartruce text background on the location page is hard on the eyes. Very good site.

    Hi Soo,

I'm very impressed with your site and the only thing I can offer in the way of help (that that isn’t just personal preference) is proof reading your text.

I think you have a few extra commas here and there and a few missing full stops.
Occasionally a missed space is joining words together. Is it possible you mean IMAX Cinema?

Forgive me if I'm wrong, I've just returned from a couple of weeks in Rome and for somebody born and bred on the Northumbrian coast of England a daily dose of 37C was just too much to handle.

circuspet has a good observation - your top pictures or heading? do look a little squished - maybe they could be a littler bigger - also while you were working on your home page it got a little off center - remember to check that each time before you publish - all in all a very nice site

    Hello,
Thanks a lot. I have found and downloaded it.
(still working on it - not easy _-_...)
The photos that look squashed are due to the template I chose.
The best option is to choose the template
with a right background (white in the middle and black on each side).
    Couldn't find anything like that.
Even downloaded 100 templates to look for it.
Will need to leave as it is until I find the right one _-_
    Thanks again.

Very clean and easy to navigate. I only wish I had the $$$ to travel to London. Not thrilled with the pop-ups from unrelated sites, but very good looking site. Well done!

    Hey!

VodaHost must be experiencing server problems because many are complaining, so don't worry, sit back and relax and wait or just send a support ticket which they may already have tons of.

I can not confirm that there is something wrong with the servers but from what I've heard theres been alot blabbing about it, hehe
    Best regards,
    Jeremy

    Hello

Web/FTP statistics hasn't been updated since the 8th February. Is it just me or everyone else too? It's all '0' indicating there were no visitors to my website for the past 5 days, which is very unlikely! Besides, I've been getting lots of phone calls from potential guests.

    Happy happy day..^^
