Thread: I do what??

I've purchased a number of websites domains without any problems. This is the first time that I've had to purchase a domain that currently exists with another provider. Basically, I'm taking over the site for a client, and am creating an entirely new website. The only thing that is to remain the same is the website domain name.
Everything has been purchased and I've been reading thread after thread about transfers, I'm still consfused. What do I do now? Do I need to do a transfer if I am creating a new site? If so, where do I start?

Since the domain name has already been registered you have to transfer the domain name (You can't register a domain name if it currently exists, only transfer).

You need to either change the nameserver on the domain or transfer it.
If you are going to change the nameserver, you or your client (depend on who has the access to it). Whatever company is the current register for the domain name should either provide you with a web panel to change the domain information (you should also change the domain name contact info to your own since you are taking it over, plus its against vodahost's TOS to use your account for others websites, they all have to be your own.

If you are going to transfer, the register lock has to be turned off, and you have to start the transfer process with whatever company you want to be the registrar for the domain name. There are several email activation steps before the transfer goes through.
