Default Asking for opinions from web vets.

    Hi there,

I've been curious as to the opinions of those that have been doing the web thingy for a while.

I've always kept everything on my pages to the left of 800 on the horizontal ruler.

Is that a good practice or simply a waste of space? I guess I worry about those who view at a different resolution but at the same time could use the space.

    Please give me your thoughts.

    Thanks,
    Tom

    Hi Tom!

Many people now own larger monitors so the argument for a page width of 800 isn't as powerful as it once was. 1000 is gaining in popularity. I, though, still prefer to design my pages to the 800 width and centre them. That way I don't upset anyone. Many people build the main body of their page to approx 800 but use the additional 200 for information that isn't as essential (like Google ads or similar). I like the way the 800 appears, even on a 1068 display, and I will continue to build my pages that way for some time to come.

    Thank you Amanda!

That's the kind of feedback I'm looking for, being a novice.

By the way, does that Fool still live up there?

    Tom

    P.S. Sorry, I couldn't resist.

Wide borders around your site can also look very coool and neednt necessarily be thought of strictly from the point of view of which screen resolution people are using.

Check out some of these (there are loads more designs to look at too)...

You'll notice that almost all the major companies are still keeping their sites within 800 - or using fluid templates. Some are just starting to go a little larger. I'm flirting with 1000 but making sure that everything my customers really need is within the 800 size -

The border idea is a good one, also. I'll be rethinking that on my next store :)
