Thread: Help: My Navigation buttons keep changing

Hoping someone can help. All day yesterday I was having problems publishing updated pages on my website. It seems as though this problem is solved and now I have a new set of problems:

My navigation buttons on each page keep randomly changing to different buttons - have a look at the pages and you can tell the buttons are wrong - when you put your cursor over and click it takes you to the right place but the text is wrong. It's driving me crazy! Anyone have any idea how to fix this?

Now my background to the left is changing to black and my navigation buttons are swapping text but still going to the right places .....

Which menu and on which page? Your Home page has a different menu than the one on the other pages.

Good to see you again. Thanks so much for responding. We will try to be a little more specific ......

Try this page for an example:

Up on the top navigation bar, the first button on the left -
it says 'Below Appraisal' - well if you put your cursor on it,
it says 'Find out more about us' - that's what it should be,
the button should be ABOUT US but the buttons keep switching the text

On the navigation bar to the right of the page -
there are 2 buttons for Property Management -
again if you put your cursor over or click it -
the button goes to the right place -
but the text is saved as 'Fractional Ownership' and 'FAQ's'

Down a little on the right navigation bar you will see that the ABOUT US BUTTON has hijacked 3 buttons and replaced it with a different style and text -
Again, the buttons go to the right place

Each page within the website has the same problem but the home page looks all good ...


It's all very frustrating ....
Not sure what to do ....
Was wondering if anyone else was having this problem ...

Any advice would be much appreciated ...

I ran into this a few days ago. I was cloning pages and noticed that the alt text was missing. Apparently, cloning had wiped out the alt text.

Have you cloned pages?

The clone tool is a method to copy or clone an exact copy of a page. It's icon can be found on the right next to the "new" icon on the top tool bar.

For some reason NavBar's tend to be tricky and don't copy very well. This is why you lose the alt text.

To clone a page, go to your BV page.
-click on File >New Page>Clone a Page, a new window will open up
-select the page you want to clone from and enter
-a new page will appear in BV newpage_clone

Before you do clone, make sure that you have the Navbar you want and double check properties. Also, check that you did not copy a NavBar over another.

No, I didn't do that ....
And it's not the alternate text I am losing ...
It is what it should be ....
It's the text on the actual button that is wrong ....

Try deleting the existing NavBar and redoing it.

But I am kind of thinking that I will have to do it on all the pages ....
Seems like a lot of work for now ...

Ok, here is the explanation of what is actually happening:

When you create a menubar, and then publish the page, BV creates an image for every single button. This image includes the text, over the button image, as UNIQUE image.
Now, when you copy / paste a menubar from a page to another, BV also keeps in it's memory the names of the images created for the previous page. So when this new page gets published, the images created for the buttons, have the same names as for the original page.

If your menubar remains the same, between the two pages, there is no problem at all.
BUT,
if you start changing the menu bar in one of the pages (something that many members do, because, page per page, they want only the links to the other pages, they don't want a button with a link to the actual page),
then, when this page is published, it affects also the menubars that are on the other pages. That's because the images for buttons are named the same.

SOLUTIONS:

1. Use the excact same menu bar in all pages. You can copy/paste from page to page without any problem.
OR
2. Recreate the same menubar, with different buttons. This will assign the new menubar buttons wholly new image names, so there will be no conflict between pages.

Naval Design has your problem identified as I had the same problem when first using bv.

As Naval Design stated the besyt way to fix the problem is to design your home page and then use as a template.

Copy and paste this page (rather than clone) as required and then rename to your copied template pages as you have named for the links within your navigation bar.

Publish all pages and all will be linked with no problems.
