why is my website suddenly poluted with numorus ActiveX popups

Because IE7 is enormously intrusive and won't hardly allow anything to run without checking first. In your case, it's the media player on the front page triggering it for me.

still works with no problems for me - but so far i've kept IE7 at bay

Thanks everyone. The problem stoped after Upgrading Media Player to version 11.
