i want to add a guestbook to my site for visitors to sign and type a message. can someone explain in simple, step by step instructions how i would go about doing this???

No problem. It's good to know that the search feature is a very useful tool when seeking answers to questions and solutions to problems. It can also save time as oftentimes you can find the answer faster yourself whilst waiting for another member to come along and answer.
