Hi all,
I'd like to enable someone to send me a large file (~35 MB) and was hoping that they could just upload it to my FTP site.
Is this possible? How do they do this?
Thanks,
Sandra

You would have to give them full access to your voda ftp publishing details and more..
Yousendit.com is free and allows for large file transfers. They upload, you are sent a link to download ... might be easier than dishing all your goods out ...

LadyEye, thanks for your reply. I've used yousendit.com, and it's a great service, but it takes a loooooong time for large files on the sender's end to upload, and I was hoping that the FTP site would be faster. I don't want to give out any publishing details, but I saw that there's an 'anonymous' access capability on Voda FTP and was hoping that this would make it possible for someone to upload to the FTP without a lot of hassle or waiting . . .
Sandra
The upload speed is dependent on the quality of the uploaders ISP internet connection, not the server...Most home DSL and broadband connections only give you a upload speed of about 2-5% of your download speed. Please review your ISP contract for further details.

I understand that the upload speed is dependent on my ISP, but for some reason, sending a large file via yousendit.com isn't working. The file is a music file that I need to put onto my site, and the person sending it to me is the site owner, so sharing my login details isn't an issue.
Can you please tell me what instructions to give him so that he can upload the file onto the FTP site? He does not have any BV software installed on his computer.
Thanks,
Sandra
He can use any ftp program and he will need to enter:
server number
username
password
How does he get to 'any FTP program'? (Sorry, I'm really new to all of this!)
Thanks,
Sandra
He just clicks ANY KEY on the keyboard :) sorry couldnt resist.
He would need to download an FTP PROGRAM like Cute Ftp, to name one, theres dozens out there.

It would be far simpler to get him to download bluevoda which includes a free ftp program and would also be useful in the long term.
There is also a video tutorial on BV FTP program.
Otherwise use Google or any search engine to find

I'd really like to make it so that the site owner has to deal with as few applications as possible.
I downloaded SmartFTP, which works great on my PC, but turns out it isn't compatible with Mac, which is what the site owner has.
Can anyone recommend a free FTP download application that runs on both PC and Mac?
Thanks,
Sandra
Hi, can you not go into C Panel & then into file manager, & then into the directory you wish to place the file in & upload it.?? I assume this area works with PC & Macs.
Sorry! Should of said. There is an upload link at the top of each directory in C Panel.
Thanks for your response, Chris. Wouldn't that require him to download VH? I'm trying to avoid having him have to do that. Is there an external free FTP site that's both Windows- and Mac-compatible?
Hi, No they don’t need BV, Just access to the control panel. So they would need the name & password. (If that’s ok)
1. Login
2. Click on file manager.
3. Click on public_html
4. If the public_html is where the file is to go? Click on upload file(s)
5. Click on a browse button & select the file from the home computer
6. Click on upload
If all else fails get then to zip the file to you & you can pop it on there for them.
Good luck.
Thanks, Chris. That sounds like a workable solution. One thing: I see that it says "File uploads are restricted to prevent account issues caused by exceeding your file system quota." Do you know what the file size restriction is?
Thanks,
Sandra

Okay, guys... I think we're going around in circles here. We've already established that SmartFTP does NOT work with Mac, and I need something that is compatible with both Mac and PC.
Chris suggested having the site owner just log into the Control Panel (without having to down load VH), and my question is:
What is the file size restriction on uploading files in the Control Panel?
Thanks,
Sandra
Hi, I would imagine that this can be set to restrict the upload size of files, but haven’t use this used this sort of restriction before. I can only assume that if this is set to (0) as mine is, that it is more or less unlimited.Originally Posted by Sandra Herber
Might have to have a look in your C Panels F&Q’s area to see how to control this if needed.
And, why should this FTP work on BOTH Mac and Windows?
FTP works on ONE computer, so it doesn't need to work on both. Once a file has been transfered, it is accessible for download with ANY other FTP, from both a Mac or a Windows computer.
You can get there either using a bus or a train ......
