    Default Sizing of Page

Would someone kindly advise me if the measurements across the top and down the left side represent the physical limitations of a page, or can one exceed them?

Your ruler measurements (top/left) are the pix size of your actual webpage. (try and stick to 800 wide x....) as this looks after all your website visitors regardless of their screen res. If you need to 'exceed' the size, the excepted rule is down and not accross, as this will bring the dreaded 'righthand scroll' into play.

Rather make use of nav bars/links to your other pages than getting caught in the trap of making your front (catch) page to large. 'Give just enough info' to catch and draw your vistors in and they won't be able to resist surfing your entire site... How much is enough???

    Cheers,

Thanks for that. It's just that I seemed to run out of space with little content created!

How far 'down' is it acceptable to go? Some sites seem to go on for ever, e.g. with ezines.

    GT,
It does depend on what type of site you are building, personally I find I loose interest in those endless sites.
I'd prefer to be given your latest or best content/article on the front page and then shown some 'select text' or tag lines from other articles, with the "read more" option. That way I can navigate around your articles/pages reading what is topical to me or what I'm after.

    Cheers,

    GT,

When you say you are running out of space, is that due to space allocation in a template? If your site is uploaded (or part of), let us have the address as it would be easier to help.

Hi, good sample of page sizes is frog design’s (post above) http://www.froggdesigns.com is set at about 764 wide.
His other site http://www.froggdesigns.com is set at 1000 wide. My site http://www.collectors-info.com is set at 780. I tend to use the 780 to 790 size, as I know it will fit just about all screens including small lap tops.
I personally wouldn’t go to long on a page, personally I think its nice to have a break, if only for a few sec’s. The only thing to avoid if you do have long pages is any large images. If you do want some images down the page to break it up a bit. Go for some thumbnails about 150x150 at about 15kb max with a link to a lager image if wanted. It will certainly help speed up the page loading times.

    Good luck.

I dislike long pages too ... I try and stick within '1000 - '1200 for the length of a page ... I would rather have the navigation on a website so that I can immediately go and find what I am looking for on a given page, as opposed to seeking through one very long page for information ...

Ps. Correction on the post above I put the http://www.froggdesigns.com in twice, instead of http://www.addoadventure.com/ for the 2nd post. But you will get the drift. Lol.
