When you use paypal and are creating your buttons, paypal will ask you if you prefer to use your own image - you simply create your image and upload it via ftp to your vh server and apply the url to the button creation page in paypal as http://www.nameofyourdomain.com/nameofimage.gif - or perhaps it is jpg or even png is accepted .. however, loses it's transparency, so if you were needing this choose the .gif extension for the image you create ...

perfectly legal ... and what is neat about it, is you can change this image anytime you like by creating new and swapping out in your ftp manager ..

Well, within reason, Jeremy......don't want to suggest that the Terms at PayPal are violated, or that the requirements (size of logo, coding formats, etc.) are ignored.

You can pretty much design a BUY button however you think it will fit your site, but the coding and associations must remain intact as generated for you by PayPal.

No, it doesn't have to be paypal, you can make text an image, it needs to be an image ... that is the only restriction ...
