and i am trying to use my own cart buttons...but not sure about encrypting buttons! (paypal)

If you are using paypal - your customers will be going to the Paypal site to pay - and THAT is secure. If you want them to pay on YOUR site, using your own merchant account, you will need to buy an SSL and make the pages where you get this information secure.

It doesn't matter whether you use buttons you make of the ones that Paypal provides, it depends on where the people are going to give the information. The buttons themselves are not encrypted.
