How can I take my site down for maintnence??

Hi

I know this is a simple question but how can I take my site down for maintnence and updates?

Do you need to take the whole site down? Why not just make changes on the pages and publish them - they will overwrite the old pages. Even if you're changing page names and links, you can publish the new pages and then publish the new index page.
If you really need to take it offline completely, I don't know the answer!

The reason is I want to change my website completely so I need to take it offline for a few days... Any ideas?

Just save the index page under a new name 'oldindex' for example and then create a new index page with just a message on like 'new site coming soon' ?

Well dependent what links are out there or what pages are listed where, will depend how much of your website that needs to be taken down if you do not want anyone to access this .. remember that people can arrive from any given page, not just your home index page .. remember too, if you take your pages down and they are listed, people will arrive at "page cannot be displayed".

You can delete any of your pages by logging into your control panel and deleting any .html pages ..

If you intend on making new pages with new names, it will be best to do a redirect on those pages that are listed to your new pages, otherwise you will lose the traffic you may have already gained to your website .. just some things to consider.

I would prepare a temporary "index" page:

Our apologies for any inconvenience.

The website is under re-construction.

Please visit us again in a week.

Thank you.

After you have finished the reconstruction just publish your new "index" page
over the the temporary one.
