A question of size.....

I don't know if I'm in the correct place to ask this question, but I'll try. If I'm not strictly obeying the rules, please forgive me!
As an absolute novice, I sometimes find it difficult to relate to various issues, and I find that a direct comparison with something similar is easier to correllate with.

Looking at the forum concerning people's new sites and their requests for comments and critiques, I saw a really impressive site which is www.eternalhair.com, and the site builder, Chickipie, was advised that the site was really heavy and took too long to load owing to the amount and size of the graphics. I understand this and found, as others apparently did, that it took a long time to load up. Yesterday I sought advice about my new site and was told that a 500 size was sufficient - and to try and not go any larger.

As a point of reference, I would be interested in learning the actual size of Chickipie's site so that I could do a direct comparison with mine.

Can you, Chickipie, or anyone else for that matter, tell me?

A note for the forum moderator: perhaps if this is not in the correct forum, would you be kind enough to move it for me.

Chickies header was at if I remember because i had mentioned the size it was well over a mb. which is very large and will take for ever to load on dial up.

Blimey, that's a lot! I'm concerned at an average page size of 2039Kb.

When assessing the page size, should I add all the pages together to determine whether it's too big to load properly, or should I only worry about the index (home) page, as the other pages are accessed via links from that one.

You are concerned with the time it takes to load each page individually. It is best to keep page widths about 850 - 950, the lenght is up to you. What slows down load times are the amount and size of images, banners and the like. When we talk about size we are refering to the actual file size not how small you shrink it using the blue sizing handels, this does not make the file size smaller. For this you need to use a program for this such as PixResizer (offered free here, use the search box to find it). Hope this helps some, Godd Luck.

Yes Ed,

I understand that.....I have a fair few images and some sound on the pages.

The issue is the file size of each page and whether I should add them all together or just be concerned about the index page size. (within reason)

File size and loading times are closely related...look for a loading time of between 1 to 2 seconds........any longer, clients are usually gone...........

Yes David - I'm having fun (I think!!!)

I'm still trying to establish what file size page will load in about 1-2 seconds - I take the point about people getting fed up and going away if they have to wait too long.

How are the islands faring? - I'm on mainland Spain and the economy is very depressed at the moment. Still, the sun's out and the gin's cheap

Our economy is probable about the same, but even so I have just sold my yacht, so things are not that bad.............we share the same sunshine and the gin...................lol
