The page should load as quickly as possible, most images should be kept to under 50kb.. however, if you are a photography site.. or an art site.. your images are going to be bigger than that in most cases to retain the quality and most people expect a longer load if thats what they are surfing for...There is NO set limit.. but you also dont want them sitting there forever and ever waiting.

Hi, you can have a nice loading site with pages around the150- 200kb mark & this will easily accommodate 6 or 7 thumbnail images linking to larger larger ones. Your bettor off with more pages than slow loading ones.
If you want to display lots of images? Use a gallery.

Most people have faster connections these days so you can run a little heavier, in my opinion. Most of these "standards" were set to dial ups, and again.. i think it depends on what you are displaying. Also make sure your thumb nails are actually SIZED down, and not the full image shrunk with the editing handles or it will take just as long to load the thumb as the FULL image.

Thank you very much for your replies. I will look into this on my page, and see where I can cut down the weight of my content.
