Question Page sizing for different screen sizes

I am very new to creating sites so any help is much appreciated.

I am developing my site on my laptop, and the web pages fit the screen perfectly. But when I view the same page on my desktop, it only fills part of the screen. I have tried doing it in reverse - designing on desktop, viewing on laptop, but then the image is far too big for the laptop.

    Any suggestions?

Usually best to use a colour or repeatable image for a background to accommodate all screens. Aim for a width of between 785 to 985 to suite most screens. Some extra help here.
