Thread: Can someone walk me through this?

I am trying to add Google AdSense to my pages. The step where the Voda admin adds my site to it is complete. They say to wait a bit for changes to take effect.

My question is that they say to use SoHo which I am unfamiliar with so the first thing I did this morning was download SoHo to my main directory. I then checked my domain to see that it was gone. I don't know if that was because I downloaded SoHo to my main directory or if it disappearing is part of the process that I am waiting to take effect. So can you tell me do I just wait for my site to reappear or did I erase everything by downloading SoHo to my main directory?

Well first who is they?

Second if you added google adsense to an html box, and published.. then you will have to wait

Third if you INSTALLED soho..not downloaded it, to your main site then YES YOU OVERWROTE YOUR SITE.

Go back to fantastico, uninstall soho, and then republish your site.

'They' are the VodaHost administration.
I went back and deleted SoHo.
I republished a test index page and I am still getting the same thing.
It is a Google 404 error page saying this site was not found on the server.

link please.. i cant tell you a thing without one..

I hope you UNINSTALLED, not deleted. If you simply deleted you will need an account reset

you published the index.html? make sure you are on the right path to public_html

I think you may have DELETED and will need an account reset from deleting the hidden files etc.

like always it is just gone I can't believe this.
Now what do I do?

put in a support ticket for an account reset. I cant really tell you without accessing your account and I dont get paid to do it.

Ok I put in a support ticket, and when putting in support tickets in the past I know that I will be waiting quite some time for half an answer to which I must respond to wait another day or so to get the other half of the answer. So I'll just go walk out into traffic while I wait.

Well this isnt a priority issue. Priority would be the servers, not software and not your mistakes. So after the MAIN issues get taken care of .. these issues get fixed.

So while youre out in traffic, pick up a book on managing your hosting account properly and how to work in cpanel.

Right, right well I'll just say that people have a long way to go when it comes to making things 'User Friendly'. All I wanted to do was add something which is commonly added to sites. One single thing which one would think would be easy to install and not until you are in it do you see that that it is not user friendly. And not until you make a mistake is it pointed out to you the simple instructions which would have prevented the mistake in the first place. It comes back to the human race being not User Friendly. They are smart to be sure, but when it comes to ease of use there's a long way to go. Someone should not have to study and become a tech guru just to add a single element which should be a push button process. Those are just my two cents but I'm sure this is now a grudge match and that's because I had a tech issue. Excuse me for asking for help I know it is asking a lot. I'll just have to go read a book from now on rather than ask a person. Books are more 'User Friendly'

There are instructions for installing soho correctly if you had read them. Several stickies in that thread.

I cant FIX IT FOR YOU without logging in and seeing whats missing. I could spend HOURS trying to tell you HOW TO CREATE FILES. Thats not USER FRIENDLY EITHER>

You have probably created some issue in your account. If not, at least the "index of" would appear (which doesn't) unless you have set it so in your CP.

Your best bet is to:

1. Connect with FTP
2. Make sure that the public_html folder actaully exists
3. If it does, make sure its permissions are 755 (you will need to go one level up, in FTP, to verify the public_html folder permissions.
4. If it doesn't, creat it (File, New folder, create folder "public_html"
5. If you create it, verify permissions (as per above step 3)
6. Publish your index page and test

If everything is fine, publish your pages

As per your instructions Navaldesign I do have a pubic directory still properly installed. the permissions are 755 and all are checked in Read and Execute. But in write Group and World are not checked. Could that be the problem?

No that is not the problem. Checking Group or world changes 755 to 777 so that's not it. I simply do not know what to do so I have asked that admin reset my account and they have actually responded asking me if I want to remove AdSense. I can't believe it. It is the most frustrating thing in the world being stuck on a tech issue like this and having a trickle of communication with the one source that is supposed to be able to fix it.
Everything else I have installed through Fantastico has created its own root file to which to upload its files by default. This SoHo was the first that did not but I kept with the feeling that it to would install properly by default. It apparently did not it wiped out my site and now upon uninstall has left my site dysfunctional. 1. There should be a warning as to what that program intends to do unless a specific file is designated for install. 2. Upon uninstall it should not have the power to wipe out your preexisting setup.
I should not have to say these things.

adsense should be a simple code that adds google ads to your site. Ive no idea what you are on about with this "adsense" thing

Please note that Soho is a COMPLETE site. So if you install it in your root (public_html) folder, it will overwrite your existing site, but not all pages.
Actually, the ONLY file that is affected (overwritten) is your index page, so after disinstalling Soho (through Fantastico, not manually) you normally would only need to publish your index page to have your normal site reappear as it should.


What I see now, is your index page that has only Google Ads and nothing more
Now, since there have been more actions there, I can't know what the issue could be.

Well I'll say this has all been rather upsetting and misleading. One persons advice threw me into this tailspin. Ok I see now you do not need SoHo to have Google ads as I was told. In fact it appears that I can add Google AdSense even without transferring my site to the Google DNS which is what caused my site to disappear in the first place. So then is it not necessary to use SoHo or upload to the Google DNS since the ad seems to be working and yet I am not on either of those?
If that is the case somebody please tell me why the VodaSupport led me down two wrong paths, SoHo and Google DNS transfer, and then got me to the point where they were about to reset my account and then completely stopped responding? I just don't understand it.

well without seeing your actual initial response i cant say or give an opinion.

there is GOOGLE ADS FOR DOMAINS.. which you transfer your domain to google and just make money with it... you dont build a website.

Then there is google adsense that you put on your site along with google search that you can also make money with.

It could be the way you phrased out your question and you was answered the best way possible...especially if the word DOMAIN was used in the process.
