    Default Security for my database.

Hi, we will have a database that will have quite a bit of personal information about our member’s personal collections, what the best way to make this as secure as possible. This information won’t be address or bank details but it will still be personal to that member.

    Many thanks.

    Chris.

If you are talking about mysql database its pretty hard to people to access it... The only way someone can get the information from the database would be

    Use your cPanel login info

    or..

They would have to use a script to display everything in the database, which would require them to be using your webspace (Unless their ip was in the list of access host's) in which case they would also need the password to the database.

So basically as long as you don't give out your cpanel username/pass, and you make the password to the database long and diffucult (like 20+ character using lowercase and uppercase letters, and number), it would be very difficult for someone to get access to your database

Many thanks watdaflip, that’s reassuring & helpful advice.

Something ells you may be able to help with. I am trying to give certain individual members of our site a free web page area to each of them as maybe a sub domain on our site with a very limited upload capability, IE 3 to 400kb. I believe I can do this through the quota part of the ftp area of c panel & give each person their own name & password.
Can I give them an ftp access to this sub domain only without them being able to access the main site in any way, or do you think this is a bit of a security risk & should avoid this route with what I mentioned in the earlier message.

    Thanks,

    Chris.

    Hi chris
If you create a sub directory/folder for each person and allow the ftp upload to that one sub directory/folder for each person, you should have no problems with your main directory as long as they do not have that password.
