    Red face How do I protect my pictures from copycats?

    I know the code for how to protect an html page, but it doesn't work on my Blue Voda site. I had someone copy my show dog puppies and pretend they were his and he tried to sell them. How can I protect them other than a watermark?

    Thanks!

    There is no real way to stop people from copying your images, I'm afraid. There are some steps you can take to discourage them but if they want them badly enough they will take them.

    You can use a watermark but this will affect how your pictures are viewed by everyone. Another option would be to disable right click. Opinions vary on this approach though with many people considering it downright rude. It's your site, they are your pictures so you should weigh up the options and do what you think is best.

    Here is a link to a thread discussing 'disable right click': http://www.vodahost.com/vodatalk/add...=disable+click

    You could also do a forum search on 'disable right click' to find a number of threads discussing it.

    Thanks, but it still doesn't show up right. When I add the code, even the code listed on the forum, it shows up as a black confetti background instead of disabling the right click. I have put it in the body where it belongs, however, I have tried putting it everywhere. Even if I make a new page in my editing program, once it is in Blue Voda, it shows ups as black confetti. Any ideas??

    Well, no, it doesn't, much to my surprise. However, when I tell it to go inside the tag, it puts it before an end (>) so that now shows on the page. I am not able to go in and put it where it needs to go.

    Hi Sheila,
    Everyone says don't disable right-click, but there are a lot of high-end companies that do, and I personally think you should. After all, copyrighted products are not to be copied, as we are forever being told.
    I seem to remember that if you are using one of the higher priced photo packages, you are able to place the image underneath a separate transparency. That way, when they click, they only pick up the transparent layer and not the image, it's just a case of placing one on top of the other.
    Alternatively, check out this site, they have another angle on it.
    The item is the second one down the page:
    http://www.moonlight-software.com/webcrypt.htm

    Let me know if you manage the transparency idea....
    Kind regards,
    Sues

    Disabling right click is seen as a bad thing because your are annoying 99% of your visitors who just want use your site to stop the less then 1% who are there to steal something from it. Plus if someone is coming to your site to steal copyrighted images, disabling right click isn't going to do it.

    Also unless the disable right click was set up right, it also will give an error when you press the mouse 3 button (used for scrolling), which is very annoying

    Html encrytpers are the same way if not worse. First off the encryption used isn't one way, it can be as easily decrypted as it was encrypted. Also what makes it even worse, for some of your perspective users that don't have javascript, or don't have it enabled, cannot view a website that is encrypted like that.

    Basically if you don't want to take the risk of images being stolen don't put them online...

    That's why you should simply watermark the pics. It can be done very professionally, just a faded text across them or something will do the trick, and this can be accomplished with any photo editing software.

    This is the script I use to disable right click.
    It works fine for me check it out on my web site. I too have had the same problem.
    details below.

    Disable right click script
    High light the script below down to the line then right click , click copy.
    Open your web page you want to disable click VEIW on the tool bar, click page HTML box opens click end of page, now put cursor in box and right click then click paste. That's it
    Now while the box is open we do the script that gets rid of the save, print image : click the between head tag
    Copy the script after the line and paste into the between the head tag, click ok
    You can now perveiw page test right click a image.
    If you want to change the message edit the red text

    <script language="JavaScript1.2">

    Var clickmessage="Sorry all images are copyright.!"
    Function disableclick(e) {
    If (document.all) {

    If (event.srcElement.tagName=="IMG"){

    }
    }
    }
    Else if (document.layers) {
    If (e.which == 3) {
    Alert(clickmessage);
    Return false;
    }
    }
    Else if (document.getElementById){
    If (e.which==3&&e.target.tagName=="IMG"){
    Alert(clickmessage)
    Return false
    }
    }
    }
    Function associateimages(){
    For(I=0;I<document.images.length;I++)
    Document.images[i].onmousedown=disableclick;
    }
    If (document.all)
    Document.onmousedown=disableclick

    Alison,

    Are the images on this page among those you "protected"? I'm not trying to be a smartass here, just showing that all "disable right click" scripts are useless.

    No, those photos Racefan20 'lifted' were from AJLamonds site. Race was using this as an example for you.

    He could get yours too. He was just trying to point out to you that, even with the 'disable right click' script, your photos can still be copied. There is NO failsafe way to stop them being copied. So he suggested that your best course of action would be to use the 'watermark' option. Thus making your photos unusable to potential thieves.

    [Apologies, Racefan, I thought you may not be around for a while ...]

    I suggest the same. The good photo co's like Stock Photo all have watermarks (which is just your name/website name) in a very light gray even an outline font across it. It doesn't take away from your photo and helps prevent those that want to right click and save it

    Hi There,

    Few of you people are right about the idea of putting a shade watermark like most of professional photography web sites do, looking at "Gettyimages.com" for example, but the thing here, this option will work only to NOT PUBLISH IN THE WEB, but anyone now can still copy it and retouche it if he really looking for it.

    watermarks arnt meant to be a solution, just a deterrent. The only way to prevent people from stealing your work is to not put it on the internet...

    I tried Sues suggestion of covering a photo with a transparency, it's the first one on my memories page, and it seems to work.

    I'd appreciate it if someone can spare the time to look.

    My instinct however tells me it can't be as easy as this?

    Sorry Mary-
    I was able to copy "quick-fast-and in a hurry"! Even with a transparency one only needs to do a print screen, past in MS Paint and then trim and save.

    There really is no way except with water marks.

    Thanks Andy,

    I think deep down I knew that I was clutching at straws.

    The irritating thing is I don't care who perhaps takes a photo because they may be interested in the professional that we happened to be working with, it's because I'm super sensitive about posting up current photos of children.

    When I need to change my pages I'll just have to carry on searching my archives for those who perhaps now are parents, or horror upon horror, grandparents themselves.

    If you can’t get round the copying side of things, you may be able to inbed your site address in to the back end of the image. So if someone else use’s your image for their site, they will have placed a type of link on their site. I notice a lot of sites where you get free scripts from all have their website address in the script. I assume this is to get their sites sort of linked to other sites for free when the spiders from search engines have a look around.
    (Think I am right in saying this, it would be nice to know for sure)
    If I am right I would be pretty sure there is a search program out there that can search the net for your images if your web address is still in the back end of the image.
    I tried this type of search with my email address & couldn’t believe how many site finds this search found on where I had left my email address, so i assume this might be the same for a web address .

    hi firstly u should get a javascript code to disable right click on your website, or get a javascript code to protect that specific image.

    this should be inserted (the code) with the add html box not the add javascript box as this slows it down and may crash ur computer.

    Unfortunately, it is not possible to protect images as there are a number of ways to steal it such as viewing the source code (html) and finding the url for the image.

    Also people can just print screen onto paint and then select the image and save it.

    There are no nonononononn ways to protect ur images and less u have a complicated watermark (e.g floral backgrounded watermar) etc. which are less possile to erase or cover up etc.

    I hope this helps
    let me knwo if it helps or pls tell me if u found an alternative

    the only way to 100% protect an image is not publish it... there are ways around the "no rite Click"... it just makes a person have to take an additional step to get the photo. copyrights and and water marks can be cropped out or edited with photo editors. laws are made to be broken... while you are thinking of ways to stop, others are thinking of how to go

    Rofl!!! I have seen some really great ones like "if you copy this I'll break your arm" or "you are very, very bad to take this picture" etc. etc...but I really like this idea!!! My industry is hugely affected by this "stealing" problem...and watermarks are the way to go unfortunately. BUt I think i will put a virus warning just for kicks!!

    How do you make a custom right click menu anyhow??

    BTW, digital images can be embedded with what is called a "digimark" and they can be tracked....i have never done this to my art yet, but a company I work for does this on the digital s****booking kits and it is really cool. If they find their images pirated somewhere, they can prove it was theirs by the digimark.

    I don't know I might have imagined it but when I tried to copy some pictures once, I found some slide shows where you couldn't copy the images themselves. Sometime they were moving slowly across the screen or appearing,fading and replaced by next one. Obviously you can printscreen but you will need a lot of fiddling for anyone to be able to use any picture. I don't know which program was used I am a novice, but they are beautiful brains out there they will know better. we'll see.

    Hi,
    I have a question also. I think my page is looking ok. But I would like to know is can someone please tell me how to put a pop up copywrited image Internet Explorer box up right before someone inters your site? Its like a pop up box that let you know that the images on my website are copywrited and to not copy without a written consent from website owner

    HOnestly there is no sure way to protect your images unles you do both, disable right click and grey out source option in the view menu, but even then, the print screen option is still available..

    The only way is to put a strong warning on your pages:

    example: "if you are a priate and about to steale my valuable collection of images, I will send gangsters to scratch your face and put your eyes out with screw drivers and burn your tonsiles with a red hot spoon then drill your head with 3/8" bit and pour acid in your scull, then take pictures of you dead and send them to your uncle after we shoot his dog... Enjoy browing our website".

    Hey - I think I'll use this warning! Good one Ez ez!
