Thread: Page Size | Load Time

Hi all

1. Anyone know how to check for the size of individual pages plz?
2. What's the ideal size of a page?

I tried through the FTP but I'm not sure that gives the complete size of the page.

Any help is appreciated.

Hi mike,
I use opera and it gives me the download size of the page and the No of inline elements as well as a decription of the I-frames.
give me the page url and I will get back to you.....

For most users it is recomended that you make your pages to fit in a 1024x768 px.

Most of new systems are configured this way, otherwise visitors will get tired scrolling up&down left&right.

I tested my site, everything was good for the exception of load time check. I wanted to know the ideal size of a page so it can be " loaded freindly" by all users.

way to big....try changing your pics to jpg and lose all the extra info contained in jpeg

Make sure you optimize all your photos, those will really hurt.

If you want the page to fit ALL computers - you don't want the page width wider than 800.

My dilema with getting to 800 width was trying to do it the way I like it.

I used box shapes with gradient option on the sides and white background where my text is in the middle. I wish I knew how to do like an auto fill on the sides with that gradient look I have whenever someone is viewing their screen beyond the 800 width. So in other words when it's 800 width it would display a white background with my text/images and when someone has their settings higher it auto fills to my desired colors. I don't think thats possible with using box shapes with gradients. I might have to re-think something else.

I'm just curious to what the ideal page size should be, so I know how many pages to provide for the pages that are full of images.

I just found what I was after. A site that tells you the page size with all of your contents. http://www.seochat.com/seo-tools/page-size/
This explains why I scored 1/10 for my load time check with http://www.sitereportcard.com/ Most of my pages are 38 kb

I read the ideal size of the page should be around 10-12 kb to make it load freindly. I don't know if that's true or not.

I guess that explains why so many sites have next page-next page whenever there's a good amount of images to display.

It's not just the number of images - most often it's the size of the images you download - you have to optimize them!

Blue Voda does not have fluid template capabilities. (That's where a site changes size when someone goes to full window.) So you have to work within contraints. I don't use 800, but I'm very careful how I place my info. If you look at www.achildspalace.com - I'm at about 1000, but if someone opens my site in an 800 window, they get everything except the bar and what's in that right column. I'll be using that column in pages for specials, etc - but people will still get a good looking store without it (I hope) - and yes, I'm still building that. I'm doing that because we don't have the fluid template option and I wanted more of the screen filled on everyone else's computers :)

this was your samples gallery page and the main page is the page itself
and the rest, the contents ie boxes, photos, and other elements.

If you try to keep your page to 10 or 12K you are not going to end up with much of a page.......take those figures with a pinch of salt.....

Beth, as usual, is on the right track. Optimise any and everything on the page but dont worry too much about loading times, you can always add an extra page here and there......

You have what a good site needs, Content, content and most important, content...............

I checked your site after I set my screen on 800, I guess you do have it wider. Now I don't feel as bad :)
I guess you're right, I have to optimize all of my images manually to try and get a better load time.
What's the best way to optimize an image and keep the clarity of it?

I loaded an empty page today as a trial and that was 2kb...grrr

Originally Some guy was suppose to do my site for me. This guy is apparently really good, anyways I checked some of his sites, one of them is my brother's. He had all his pages at 10 kb on the dot and the gallery pages he was at 14 kb which was the max. So when I read on the net about a page should be 10-12kb, I thought maybe thats a good guideline to follow.

Having said that, I just checked msn.com and yahoo.com and they're both over 34kb. allthough their load time is still less than my pages, which range from 14 to 34kb.

I guess the end thought is. People with slow dial up internet connections are used to waiting anyways. I guess i'll try to optimize my images a bit and leave it as is for now.

use the pix resizer or a photo program and size your pics for where they're going - make them as small in pixels as you can without losing quality.
