    Question Uploading thro FTP

    Hi everyone,

I'm scratching my head over this..please help if you can

Firstly ..is blueftp and ftp the same ?

I've added a sub domain and ive bought an info site to link to my main website but i dont know how to upload these files so that i can publish them...i tried to do it thro bv but couldnt ..then i tried ftp thro bv and couldnt ...so now ive watched all the tutorials on ftp and sub domains ...again!...but they dont tell me what i want to know.

So far all ive managed to do is add the sub domain....what do i need to do next?

Do i need to create a new folder somewhere? if so where?

Will i be able to edit this site with bv?

Always grateful for any help you guys can give me.

    Hi linda,
If you have a sub dir called "mysub" and your main site is called "mysite"

then when you use BV to publish, you publish to

    public_html

To publish to mysite/mysub .... add as below

    public_html/mysub

Hope thats enough, if not get back to us...........

Told you i'd be back! lol

These files are ready to upload and are already in html format ...so how do i get them on BV...i tried opening page with existing html and my pc had a mental fit!..files everywhere! couldnt close them so had to shut down ..and where have they gone? ...ive no idea!

So my question is now ...how do i get the files from my desktop to bv if they are already in html format ....cos now i'm having messages saying .."unexpected file format"

To import existing html files into bv:

File>new page>from existing html page>local on this computer selected

then select the html file you wish to import.

You can email me at kiko(at)mvtinia.com if you wish (replace (at) with .)

You just need to use BlueFTP for this. Connect, navigate to the subdomain's folder and upload the files into it.

Linda, it is simple: you have the html files you bought on your computer, right?
Go in BlueFTP, connect, and on the right part of the screen you will see your site content. Click on your subdomain folder (it usually has the same name of your subdomain). Now, on the left side you have the content of your computer. Browse to find your html files. Select them and simply drag them to the right part of your monitor (i.e. your subdomain folder)

Thanks guys...but its gone past simple now....i think ive made a right hash of things while trying to do stuff myself.

I clicked on "local" in FTP then clicked ok for my C: Drive instead of cancel ..then panic set in! ...my whole C: drive seemed to be on FTP! but ive been away from my pc for a couple of hours and now ive looked again and all seems back to normal..phew!

This is a zip file does my sub- domain have to be the same name?

David bless him, has been helping me out here...but i thought i'd put my stupidness up anyway for all the world to see ...just in case anyone else does the same ...(tho i doubt it but i live in hope lol )

Unzip it in a folder on your computer, so it won't get mixed with other things. Then follow the steps i described above.

What specifically is the zip file designed to do when unzipped? In general, no, you don't want to rename it or anything of the sort, just unzip and upload. To upload more than one file at a time, use the usual trick of clicking one, and then using ctrl + click to select any others you want to upload at the same time (or shift + click if you want to upload all).

    The email bounced:

    I have re-sent it.

    Anyway, that was the content:

Hi Linda, sorry, just had a look at my email.
vegetable-garden.html is NOT a zip archive, it's just a html page (unless you have mistaken the extension). If it is indeed a html file, just upload it on the server, using blue Ftp (Blue FTP is a FTP software, it is simply called Blue because it is part of BlueVoda), others are called Smart FTP, Quick FTP and so on.
If it is a zip, unzip it. First create a folder on your computer, called f.e. "garden". Then double click on the zip file, and the content of the zip archive will appear. It will probably be a number of .html pages. Click on "Extract to" and the files will be extracted from the zip. Select as destination folder your "garden" folder. At this point you have the files, unzipped, in your "garden" folder.
Open BleFTP, connect to your site, and in the right part of the screen you have your site structure and content. Click on the ""veggigarden" folder to open it. When it opens, there should only be two files in there, a folder (cgi-bin) and a file called ".htaccess". Now, on the left part of the screen you can see your computer content. Usually what you see is your Bluevoda folder content, so navigate (use the UP arrow) to find the "garden" folder". Select all the files, and drag them to the right part of your screen, that is your "veggigarden" folder on the site. You are done. If you have problems, let me know, or send me un email with the zip attached, and i will upload the files for you.
    Bye

    Giorgio

You can do it directly in notepad, or in an HTML Editor. I strongly suggest that you use a VISUAL html editor, as it will be much easier for you to edit your pages.
Please note that BV can import the pages, BUT there will be a lot of things that VB can't handle, as it is a generator and not editor. Also, the pages of the site you have bought are htm, not html, whilst BV will publish the pages in html. So you will also need to download agian the page, open it in Notepad, and then save on your computer as htm and upload again. It will become rather difficult.

But i also suppose that your site has come with some editing instructions: it probably has some text files that are used only for editing the text in the pages. If what i suspect is true, and you only want to edit the text, it will be quite easy. Just follow their instructions.

I tried and it can be done but it is quite hard as some pieces of the code are not recognized as such by BV. You can do it easily in notepad and remember to save the page as .htm and then upload it again.
