It's exactly those specific, lesser used phrases that people CAN get found on Google early on - it might not bring as much traffic as the general phrases - but people will be finding EXaCTLY what they're looking for and be more likely to buy (if your site is professional and ready for them).
Nice to see, David.
Thanks for the insight Beth
It’s always pleasure Beth learn from you regarding search engine
and keywords. I little works with my but maybe is not to hot for
my website. If people look for “mercata” I am on first page on
google some time my friends look for “zlatko marketing” and
find me also on first page. Please if you have time give
me some idea for better solutions.
Big Thank You
Zlatko
P.S. if you type in google “zlatko cook” I am not this one...lol
Beth is right, you are far better going for key-phrases at first than trying to compete with keywords.
If you look in your webstats it will tell you all the phrases people have put in to find you. A very useful tool indeed, as it is not very often that people put in one word searches to find what they are looking for, espcially a site like mine.
Well done though Lee, it is always nice to see yourself on page 1.

Why would I find your websites by putting in Zlatko Cook? Am I missing something - did you optimize any of the pages for your name?
I don't suggest you go for keywords that you and your friends are playing with - but for the words/phrases that the stranges who need to find you for you to make money will be using. Strangers will not know the name of your business or your name - so you need the general phrases for what your business does - find those and optimize for them.
Exactly, Paul. However, remember - if they found you using those phrases - you also need to go do research and find the phrases that they are using and you are NOT being found in - and optimize for them as well.
Correct Beth, this is why I add new pages also and try and put certain phrases in there. The blog does o.k for this also. But as you know a page can only hold so many phrases, before it tends to not read right or begins to look spammy.Exactly, Paul. However, remember - if they found you using those phrases - you also need to go do research and find the phrases that they are using and you are NOT being found in - and optimize for them as well.

The industry I am in is hyper competitive so I decided a while ago to just forget basic keywords and focus on the longer tail search phrases. My results on Google aren't great due to Googles new search algorhythm but by concentrating on other Search Engines I have lowered my stress level and increased sales and profits!
It is said that peeople use Google more for shopping for something, more people seem to buy from Yahoo and MSN . I decided a while ago to let Google go and concentrate more on the other major search engines instead and my traffic is staying about the same but my sales and conversions have trippled!
I believe that Google results will improve for me over time but since one element that they use for ranking is site age, the easiest way to compete in a very competitive market is for a new site to try and become well ranked for their search keywords on MSN.
I just thought I would throw that out there.
Its not just that they are long tailed search or end tail as you put it. Its what people are really searching for. Beth and I just proved this with my new site Charming, and I come up #2 to #4 for TARGETED 3 and 4 word phrases on google. People start out searching for Widgets, and get too many results...so then they start typing in, Black Widgets...still too much and too many other things to search thru to find what they want...so then they type in Black widgets for my thingamaroo! About now they are seeing exactly what they are looking for and are probably ready to buy and or bookmark to come back and buy after they look at maybe one or two more. Its very hard to come up 1st for a single keyword, and be relevant to exactly what the customer wants to buy.
