I have a question for you if you don't mind.

I read somewhere recently that if you leave your meta keywords blank that in certain cases this could benefit you as Google will then be able to keyword and place the site itself.

This might sound stupid but I have a site which might benefit from this as it is a tad too difficult to keyword (I have my reasons, trust me!)

The article, which I can't find now said that rather than keyword it incorrectly it can often be best to leave empty and let Google take the content from each individual page for themselves.

Can I have your expert opinion on this please?

Im not Beth, but, google does this rather or not you fill in the keyword tag or not, as it no longer uses it, unless you spam it. Google sometimes does not use your description meta tag to display you in the search results either, unless your description is specific to the search being done.

Other SE do still use the keyword meta tag.

The only thing I'll add to Karen's answer is that Yahoo doesn't use the keyword meta either, and it is believed MSN no longer does either. Just some of the little guys do.

Leaving the keyword meta empty won't have any effect on Google.
