Talking Locking Images To Prevent Copying

    Marc Sanders

    www.fakeitbikinistore.co.uk

    Guys and Gals,

    Help is required once again...

I have been granted the rights to use Photographs from my supplier on my site. But this doesn't extend to people copying them for other uses if you know what I mean!

I have tried coming up with a way that the photos cannot be copied, but this is very difficult as I overlay a shape then set it to transparent.

This is not ideal as I then need to ensure this shape links to the correct pages (Yet more work).

Any simple Idea's will be very much appreciated...

    Cheers

There are no simple ideas.....this has been discussed over and over again with having reached a solution.

If you dont want it copied, dont put it on the internet.....

thats about the best solution that I have seen in all other
    threads on this subject.

Do a search on copying or protecting pictures and you will see what I mean.

Hmm, not quite what I was looking for - but hey, it will have to suffice!

I have seen web sites where images are locked out, and have managed to do it the long way round with Voda. I was just hopeing for an easy method as I have close to 4000 images...

    Thanks all the same...

Someone posted a tip the other day suggesting making the images rollover images with the rollover set to an image of text with a no copy warning. David's right, of course, if people are determinded - they will get them but this may put some of them off.

If you own the images, consider using a watermark say along the edge where it will still allow users to enjoy your images.

That was me on the mouse over.

No, there is no guaranteed method, but this is a possibility including the watermark on your photo. You use a solid color pic or any picture and could include text or not. You could just leave it blank. When the viewer puts the cursor on to save it, it mouses over to a solid blank color or wording "Sorry, copyrighted" or whatever. It's worth a try.

Even if you do a "No right click" thing, its not hard to overcome, you just do a print screen and get the pics from that.

Yeah your right, but there is no harm in everybody knowing, so that they know the pitfalls and what they are up against when sitebuilding.

Your both absolutly right and even then you just have to look in your cache
and there they are in all their glory........

Also I have seen a site that has watermarked All the photos and it looks horrible. With a little work one can also get rid of the watermarks....

Life sucks as far as photos are concerned...........The rectangle overlay is my method, but even then its not foolproof....

    good luck with your 4000................

I have just put a copyright warning and hopefuly this may scare a few off and at least that way I can get them if I see my work somewhere later...although this probably is'nt foolproof either. Sigh....

Well this worked for me, create a table with only one cell, and border size
at one, drag to enlage it over all your pics and set layer in front of your pics,
this way when they try to copy it they will only copy the border.
    hope this helps

Or, someone suggested the desktop grid. But, still for 4000 photos? Then you need two sets, one with for web and your original ones. Yikes...

    Hey!

Here is an html code that will help you out so that NO ONE is ABLE to LEFT CLICK which means no copy / paste.

    <!-- Begin Code provided by bwservices.ca -->
    <body bgcolor="#FFFFFF" ondragstart="return false" onselectstart="return false" oncontextmenu="return false">
<!-- End Code provided by bwservices.ca-->

Or do the rollover thingy-majig and select the picture that you want seen as the initial image. As the rollover image, go to google and search their image gallery for a picture that says "image not available". You could make yours too if you want (no point in using other people's stuff if you don't want to share, if you know what I mean). That way, when someone moves his/her mouse over your picture that they are so tempted to copy, the image changes into the one that says "image not available". But that kinda gets rather tacky...

I favor (and am in the process of implementing) the simplicity and immediate effectiveness of the transparent overlay technique in BV for 'protected' graphics, logos, or images.

Finding a solution for carts (re: product images and other provider marks) is something I am dreading. Doing some homework....

(and maintaining a POLICY about copyrights rather than simply having a copyright symbol on your page is the first justifiable means of recourse should you have to chase an offender down - you have to clearly state the 'rules' and offer the opportunity to be fairly warned. Then a letter from an attorney usually suffices....I had to do it to get PriceScope (a Canadian site!) to abandon their use and promotion of a term/name I had "protected".....and I would not have even known unless I constantly googled my terms. words, etc. Doing it for images would seem impossible.....

Not all of us have the luxury of being so cavilier, Gary.....
Relationships with vendors and mega-companies often means being put into the role of playing cop just to keep that relationship alive, and when you depend on certain products or services in a business, it's simply a concern that nags you always unless a reasonable solution can be found!
I may be pretty successful doing what I am doing, but even I cannot afford to constantly pull tens of thousands of dollars out of my butt to make a BS lawsuit go away just because I didn't do my "due diligence"! >>and googling doesn't work for images....it often provides a means to track yours, however, depending if you relabel/retitle them and keep track of the names....

Exactly! That's why I have a real POLICY on my sites, like this one pulled off my mall which pretty much gets me off the hook for so many other companies, but also allows the "laywer letter" technique to be so effective:
All content, systems, technologies, images, copyrights, servicemarks and trademarks are protected under US Federal and International Laws, and are vigorously defended by respective owners and registrants. Every instance of infringement or other violation are promptly referred to and fully prosecuted by the FBI and Interpol.

That's it from me....no matter how I try to keep it brief, I get wrangled into "novelettes".....back to work I go!

Cool Re: Locking Images To Prevent Copying

Ok, enough now. I have the answer I'm looking for - basically it resides with the consience of people viewing the sites not to rip off the images...

If their sad enough to do so, then so be it!...

The fact that someone is sad enough to get a solicitor / Lawyer involved bothers me some what! Lol! I was only interested in protecting the images that were entrusted to me from another company.

    Thread finished...Laid to bed!...Totally Crucified!!!!...Murdered even....

I noticed the new time listing. Telling people GMT-# I like it, hope it adjusts for daylight savings time.

Just like Amanda, looks like Votahost never stops working.

Firstly people can "google" for an image - I've had it happen to me. They'll search for 'uploaded' with the image no - or what they think it is which we've often told them anyway.

As far as images you don't own the copyright for, it is really up to the copyright owner to enforce the law. If we put copyright notices - that should protect us legally. If a company gives you permission to use a photo on a website they are (as Bethers would put it) giving their permission for anyone to steal it off your site. Don't allow it to be posted on ANY web site is the only answer if someone is fanatically about their stuff not being stolen. We haven't come up with anything totally fool-proof although the transperency feature of BV shapes is useful for some things.

Just simply add a layer over the image in bluevoda that you do not want your website visitors to copy.

I put my photos in a light box and right clicking doesn't allow you to save the picture, only the link!

The photos I don't want people to steal I still mark even in a lightbox. If you check your stats you may find like I have that many people 'google for your image. If they can get any name that you've uploaded it under (& we often put it in for SEO anyway). If an image is in a lightbox that usually means we have uploaded a nice large image. They can then right-click & save that! Sometimes I have most of the entries to my site from an image. I have images of 2 boomerangs on the bottom of my home page - unmasked - I had dozens & dozens of 'googles' done on them.

If you have any particular photos that you dont want poaching, why not consider putting them on a protected page which even google wont see.

You could then request that people "Login" to view those particular photos.
    (this could be automated)

    Just a thought....................

I have a FREE set of scripts to give away and a very useful function is the ability to protect an individual page, or pages.

The above with a simple "Register Now" to view more exceptional photos
would take them, and them alone to view the additional material/content.
    (hidden from SEO's as well)

An added bonus is that you will also be building up an interested client database of names and emails.

If you are that interested see THIS:
