I needed smaller links for menu than the buttons provided so wanted to just link with simple text at top of page. I have followed same procedure I think as would do for button menu and have added at the end of every link page name followed by .html Needless to say it's not working, first of all can I do this (that is not use the menu buttons.

You can either use the menu bar style to have what you want (2nd button up on the left side menu of BV).
Or just highlight the word your want to link & use the hyperlink button & add the url of the page you want
