Linked but wrong result.

Hi,
I have a link which, when clicked will provide a file to download a software product to the customer.
The original instruction manual is a pdf file which i have altered and need to replace the old one with this file.
Here is what I did... I have deleted the old file from the folder and saved the edited(new) file into the folder which resides in my documents. I have opened the BV ftp facility deleted the old folder from the upload (right side) and copied the new folder into that side. When I open it in there, it does confirm that it is the folder with the new content.

However, notwithsranding the above action when I open the page and click on the download button it contnues to download the old folder.
How is that possible if I have deleted it?
I have tried refreshing the page in the browser, but to no avail.

Please give some advice as to how I can get the edited folder to be come available to the download facility.

This is because you linked to the FOLDER and not the file.

Hi Karen.
I have checked the FTP'd folder... it is in the ftp side of the FTP page and opens correctly showing the content of the folder.
I have done as you say but it now tells me it can not find it. (404)
Here is how i did it.
I created a new folder in FTP under forextraderspa and moved the RAR file (three stacked books) which contains the download data into it. It is there.
The folde It opens correctly -folder name is pasitedownload.
I have relinked with the given URL 9as per your reply) but it gives me a 404 .. still don't understand or know why this is happening.
Have tried padownloadesite/winrar.rar and padownloadsite.rar/winrar.rar... neither of them are right.
please advice further

The link on your page is

That means the download file is named Winrar.rar and it is in a folder named pasitedownload in you public_html folder. So the first question to ask is, is the file named Winrar.rar? I'm asking that because it's an unusual name for a download, and would require people to have Winrar to open the file. Have you considered making it available as a pdf file, which anyone could open (or more than one if the file is very large)? Also, a name like pamanuel.pdf is more descriptive. And capital letters are not good to have (Winrar.rar).

Well now you have created another folder with NOTHING in it called pasitedownload

You dont upload them to the ftp folder, you need to upload them to your public_html/pasitedownload/

its correct in giving you a 404 because what you are linking to doesnt exist. This tells you the URL is incorrect, you have to PAY ATTENTION to what folder you are UPLOADING to.. and think accordingly.

Hi Hans,

Could you give the directory - folder - structure how
you have set it up exactly on your server?

You have public_html and under it what do you have as far
as directory/folder.

Not to get confused further, I suggest you name the directory
with no extension and name the file with the proper extension.

He has 4 pdf files that i told him to ZIP and he used winrar.. and yes.. the file is named WinRAR.rar I seen it on the page before..else I wouldnt have been able to correct it for him.. Dont make me send you to mowing lawns..lol

I have a folder in My Documents which holds three files, which are to be downloaded by the receiver. All I want, is to get the receiver to click on the site link and to be able to download these.
So what I will do now, forget about Rar as I am not aufait with this any way, seem to battle my hmmmm off to find how to zip a file in there. I shall also delete the pasitedownload folder from my public_html. I will create a new folder in Ftp and name it differently to try and get rid of the pasitedownload enigma and put the three files into this new folder one by one from my documents, and see if that will work. I'll ofcourse rename the link to the download button in the site.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO do NOT create it in the ftp folder.. it needs to be in the HTML folder else you wont be able to LINK to it..

Hi Karen,
I have deleted all. I am confused.
I have a folder in my documents which has 3 files in it that should be able to be downloaded from my site.

You say put them in an HTML folder... how?

The folder in my documents is now called padownload it contains the three files for downloading off the box button when clicked.... please... where to from here if you tell me to create some form of folder please tell me where and how. I have created and ftp'd for a week and nothing works. I am with BV because I do not understand coding so I can not create any html code.

Please take me back to the beginning without the RAR bit as this does not make it any simpler. Yes and I have read the how to in RAR but what they tell me I do not have in the version I have downloaded on my desk top, it considerably different, so if we can do without this please do it like that.
I have deleted it from the ftp again.
As I have not done this sort of thing before unfortunately I need a step by step instruction.

go to cpanel, in your hosting account... file manager, public_html, create afolder there .. named whatever you want.. click on it to go inside it and upload your files.... to this folder...you can do it right there in the file manager

BTW the issue isnt what you have named the rar file, but where you have UPLOADED it to.

Hi Karen,
done as explained... never been inside this c panel before in file manager.
I have created the folder which now appears in the forextradingpa.com
called it pa download... how and where do I "Upload" my files which are in a folder in my documents. Obviously when i clicked on the new folder the left hand half of the screen was empty. the folder in my documents is called pa.

right at the top there is UPLOAD files while you are in that directory.. browse for file and navigate to it in your my documents folder... and upload it

Well I tried with the following result.. no files in folder after I did the following
>cpanel
>filemanager
>forextraderspa.com
Createted new folder called it pa
folder visible in right division of screen in forextraderspa.com along with all others in there
>pa folder (now line highlited in blue)
>button on top of page upload
came to next screen displaying 3 upload screens
>first field - it opened my documents folder on my computer
>pa folder in my documents which holds the 3 files- can not upload!
>a file from my documents pa folder it uploaded this in the first upload field I repeated this for the other two files. 3 files uploaded. Each showing in separate upload box.
>return to file manager
>pa
Folder empty.
.
> opened pa in file manager under the forextraderspa.com PA FOLDER EMPTY

The explanation merely said upload your files... If one has never done this it is a search to find how and where and to push the upload button was an adventure... I did not know what to expect!
As I said here above I tried to upload the folder which contains the files... NO GO.. than I uploaded the individual files - don't know to where it uploaded these I do not see them in file manager- in cpanel- in forextraderspa.com- in new folder pa.
What happened please?

thats because you didnt CLICK to ENTER the folder before you uploaded,, you need to be INSIDE the empty folder and THEN upload.

and you cannot link to whats on YOUR computer.. it has to be the server link.. you have also LEFT spaces in your file name

The biggest problem to you COCKING UP is that you dont READ.. you try to make SHORTCUTS.. and do it your way and frustrate everyone trying to help you. You are simply going to have to INVEST THE TIME TO READ and LEARN.

Karen the files are definitely in the folder I created in file manager.
When I open that folder a pop up comes up with the following message and can not be deleted till I agree not to run this scrip... the message is..."A script on this page is causing Internet explorer to run slowly do you want to delete it... etc etc... If I say "no" it keeps re-appearing I have no option but to agree to the script deletion than I can continue to work. do you not think that becase the file which is in the new folder is not a known computer language, but a specialised MQL langiuage that this may be the reason why it gives me a 404? After all I had to agree to delete the script. Yet the files remain in that folder.
I have made a printscreen to show you is there any way that i can send this to you? Please dont tell me to send the link as i would not know how to do this.

Your file names are NOT going to be workable, you need to rename them and reformat them.

http://www.forextraderspa.com/padownload/PA ManualV2s09.pdf has spaces in it.. remove the spaces.

BreakoutAlert.ex4 isnt a format that will just open for anyone..it says its a text document but 99% of the population wont know that.. so its worthless.

Hi Karen,
The .ex4 file does not get opened it gets downlodedas an unopenable file to ones desktop than copied and pasted into a special folder that is standard on the trading platform. I receive files like that by email and via download links. They appear on my desk top as unopenable files.
If I may I shall email you the result of this file downloaded on my desktop. The pdf manual tells the buyer what to do with that file. As the buyers will be traders, most will know what to do with this.
Let me do what you have told me and see where it takes me.

As i receive files like this as I said in my previous email, I went back to your very original advice. ie put the files in a folder and roar then. the problem was that I have never used rar or zip and try as i would with rar I could not put it together.
I have now put this together, but purely by accident - trying all sorts of things - I would not at this time know how I did this as it was just "Oh well let me try this"... and Wallah! it had given me a rar compresssed file (three stacked books) I put this rar file in the padownload folder and it worksPlease download it on your desktop and you can see the file type that the File is that I said only get copied into a special platform folder.
Thank you again for all your interest and help.
the RAR help files do not tell one hopw to compress a file, if you know of a tutorial please send me the url.
