Thread: Published- links not working

Hi all,
My questions will never end, lol. I have just published all my pages and over half (bottom half) won't link. I checked all for .html tags and those appear right. I read in another forum something about publishing to "public_html....I see nothing re: public on my page ppties page...can't figure out what I'm doing wrong.

Any help, you know I appreciate you!

When you publish any page from your blue voda web builder you will be publishing to public_html unless you changed it ... When you go to publish take notice of the pop up box that comes up, there you will notice your ip publishing address and public_html ...

I believe you are not linking to the same name that you have called, saved, and published your page ....

all of this must be the same ... you then recall the page or call up the url (link) via http://www.colourtherapyspa.com/nameofpage.html

you do not add the .html when saving or publishing, blue voda does this automatically for you ...

you will need to check all the names of how you saved your pages and edit where necesssary ...

So I think between naming your pages and then applying the proper url to the link is what is happening .....


Name pages - all small letter no spaces, or if you do use a space use _ like you have ....

recall by the same using the .html at the end ....

Yes .... on a page that you make, you choose the name, other than your very first page which must be called index, saved as index, published as index and recalled via the internet when you type in your domain name. All the rest of the pages can be named by your choice. The page properties box is used for different things. The title you see in there, you can type the title of your page, call it anything you want, it is totally different from what you are saving, publishing and recalling your page by .... It is the title you will see appear when you are viewing the page, you will notice this on the bottom of your computer screen, that will be where your title shows up, not the internet address that you will notice at the top of your computer monitor...

the name by which you saved your .bvp file, (that is the file that is made when you make a page in the web builder), you must publish this as the exact name and you retrieve it via the exact name, except, to retireve it you must use the .html - you do not use this when you make and save or publish you page, voda does this for you ... but to retrieve it or link it you must ...

You can choose to use the _ or not ... you can write your words like this .... chakra_jewelry or chakrajewelry .... not much difference, your choice ... just no spaces or capital letters ....

No, the title of your pages might be all different, for instance if you have jewellry selections, that page could be titled jewellry selections, if your page is about relaxing techniques for spas, title that page as such ... this title part is the part on your page properties only, not what you call and save and publish as your page remember...

yes this is when you add the .html when you are typing in the link that you are inserting to the button, navigation bar or even an image that you are linking to ......

Target .... leave this empty if you are linking everything to your site ... if you for instance were sending the viewers to someone elses site via a link from your site, you might consider using _blank, this will then open another page on their computer and when they close that page, your site is still on their computer - in technical terms - it opens another window ...

It probably IS the problem, as the first four or five menu items on the index ARE working and were pretty cut and dry as to what they should be named across the board. I was of course an accident that I named them properly!

yw Leeza .... you are doing great ... it is alot to remember, and yes, you did most of your pages correctly, and it can become confusing ... I have total faith in you in finding and fixing up and it will become old hat to you ....

Just one comment - the TITLE is not the same as the name of the page and you do NOT have to nor want the title to be the same.

The name of the page is what you save it as - and what you use to do the url. The title has nothing to do with that.

I know Holly said this, but wanted to make sure that you didn't confuse naming the pages with the titles!

Simply put - whatever you save the page as - is the extension for that page - as Holly, with no spaces and no caps.

ALSO..(cont. from thread above)...e.g. beauty, body, bath page...I set all to a specific text color, double checked it again and again...and as published some lines of text are showing burgundy and some showing blue as I want them to. clues?

When you make a page and save it ... you only save by it's name ... do not add your domain name ...(http://etc.) and do not add .html

Save only by its name .... example beauty_body_bath

That is it ......

VODA AUTOMATICALLY ADDS THE .html AND PUBLISHING THIS TO YOUR public_html automatically goes to your domain name http://www.colourtherapyspa.com - these two things are not done by YOU!


To retrieve or link to it from a word, or navigation bar, or image .... when inserting tghe link, you insert the full url .... example ....

DO NOT SAVE YOUR PAGES WITH .HTML AT THE END OF IT ....
SAVE AS THE NAME ONLY

TITLE OF PAGES IS DIFFERENT ... TITLE OF PAGES THAT YOU ADD IN THE POP UP BOX OF YOUR PAGE PROPERTIES IS FOR REFERENCE ONLY, FOR SEARCH ENGINES, NOTHING TO DO WITH SAVING AND RECALLING YOUR PAGES .....

Do you mean because some words that you have linked are burgandy and some are blue? Is that the way you want it? Or not? On page properties, you can change the colours to your links. under Background ... Link ... Visited Link and something else, I forget, but you will see the three categories for color choices of the link there ....

Hi- thanks for noticing, I just fixed that one. Another very strange thing...I tried to click on aromatherapy from index page and it would NOT come up...said 404 error...how come it comes up sometimes and not others?

And hmmm...I didn't know you could go to my links and see how I set them up???? (sure glad you can tho, whatever magic you're using!!)

lol Leeza ... here is the trick
When you click on the link and it takes you to the 404 error page, look up, look way up, and you will see an address written in your address bar of your computer .......... this shows you what is written for the link ... when you look at that ... you will be able to note where your errors are ....

You have lots on your pages that are not correctly done ... you need to go through each page, and each link on that page and look, notice, and correct .... every page, and every link on every page, so you have like 14 links on 14 pages or so, they all need checking, there are broken links everywhere ...

REMEMBER

Save your page by a given name, all small letters, no spaces, and if you do use spaces use _ to connnect them ..... NOTHING ELSE

Publish to public_html

If I cannot see anything wrong with the link and I continue to get a 404 page, that tells me you have not linked it the same as you have named it.

A broken link simply means one that is not working, one that takes you to the 404 page ....

It's just a matter of looking at each page carefully - some of them the page is published correctly but the link to the page is wrong - like with the chakra blends specialty sets - you don't have .html on the end.

BTW, on the aromatherapy page you left off the navigation - not a good idea.

On pages - like sunglasses - where it all looks correct but you're getting the 404 - go into where you have it saved and make sure you don't have a typo or anything extra there.

And the links on this page - when they get too long - they automatically get truncated - but still work (if they work).

going to sink my teeth into this and get it resolved...and I grew up with people thinking I was a perfectionist. Guess they were wrong lol...

ummm Bethers..in my linking page I do have .html on chakra blends...could it be a bad link because it is too long?

See this is where you can get in trouble - it's right on the home page - but I was going from page to page - and on the http://www.colourtherapyspa.com/beauty_body_bath.html page (beauty_body_bath in case this gets truncated) - it's wrong.

ummm...^^"put in your navigation the same on all pages"...do you mean e.g. on index page write menu item ,(e.g.) "food" and make sure that on beauty page- and all other pages... it also says (e.g.) "food" exactly? If so, that's something I know I need to work on, I tried lots of times to cc/paste..but sometimes that didn't work page to page...and I punted. So if beauty_body_bath is written as menu item on index page, it should read beauty_body_bath on any other page where it is a menu item...right? Sorry just not familiar with lingo here- "navigation"

And...if it's wrong on some other pages, could that mess up a link say, from the index page even to a page that IS right, as the computer "does its thing" to get to that page? i.e. can it pass an incorrect page in process of reaching proper page and get mixed up because of the incorrect page in the way? Does this question make any sense.

I am, however, still going strong, now in corrections!!! HEEHEE.

P.S. to above - once I fix a page and it's corresponding page(s) shouldn't those pages WORK? I swear, I've triple ck'd beauty_body_bath, aromatherapy_essential_oils and chakra_blends_sets....and the links still are not working. My website hates me.

Yes, if you have fixed and republished them. Two of your above three pages I notice you have fixed and are working.

Hey, I'm making PROGRESS! I do see some pages working...others are still a challenge but what a relief to know I'm getting there...why the aromatherapy page won't work I cannot figure out...here's how I've got everything (I cc'd and pasted my links on a word processor, too... to be sure I had them right)

i just can't see my problem! except I notice that in YOUR thread post above, Holly part of the wording in the link has disappeared just as it did earlier in one of my posts. Wonder if this is happening subliminally on the web!

Another thing happening is that on my chakra blends page- that page only- , when I click it from the index page, it shows up BRIEFLY then flips to a page where McAfee says they have my site queed for rating...and that's been going on since yesterday. I have Mcafee as my virus scan but why would it take over my website!!! This ever happen to you?

I've got another few days of this, I'm sure (THEN onto phase 2 optimizing!) But you and Beth have been really helpful, just want you to know I sure do appreciate it!!

When you are referring to your main page, which is http://www.colourtherapyspa.com you only use that .. you do not have to use the .html for that page ....

every link from any page that goes to your home or main page should be linked as http://www.colourtherapyspa.com


Do you mean some of the words in this thread are missing or do you mean things that you have copied and pasted are not showing here ... just be sure you copy and paste accurately and they should all show up ...

The wording to LONG urls gets truncated on the forum - thus you will see:

On the left - under View Cart - that is your navigation menu.

You are going to each page and retyping it - and you are occastionally making mistakes and not lining it up the same. It should look the same on all page. That's consistency and lets the se's find it. That's what I was saying - if you get one right - then make a template - or copy and paste it using the copy and paste icons - onto every other page. That way all the links will be the same and work the same.

Now, you are adding more info under these on other pages, which is fine, but you are, in some cases, covering part of the menu when you've done so:

And, yes, make sure you follow Holly's instructions about your home page link - you do not need - nor do you want - to have the /index.html to link to that page.

On the contact us page, you need to make the background squares bigger - as right now the navigation is running off it! That would be stopped if you made/used a template for the navigation - or copy/pasted it with the background for it to each page. (You could still then make changes on the pages you use different colors, etc.)

OOOOOHHHHH KAY...think I've finally gotten myself out of the dense forest I fell into. Most of the links from home page to corresponding are now working...one (chakra blends) has McAfee messing with it so I'll prob'ly have to call them to see what they're doing...and still having a bit of trouble with "terms" page..BUT I see the golden light at the end of the tunnel, thanks to you! Why couldn't I GET IT??? Duh. Blonde days.

I'll be going back in over the weekend to change individual pages and make sure all those links work, too...

Do wonder why (Beth) my text/images are running out of boxes and displacing...I didn't add a thing to "contact us" page...this is what I mentioned in a different thread when I said this was happening and I'd been told was because I was using a laptop vs. desktop. Could anyone (if time) guide me what to do (e.g. move box up/down 1/2 inch, to side, whatever...because on MY computer it all looks proper. Then when more things come up I can deal with them one at a time.
