Hi everyone, today I tried hyperlinking some text, but when I published the page with the text on, the hand which appears when you go over the link did not, and does not appear.

Perhaps you didn't link it correctly ....

Highlight the entire text and be sure to include http:// in front of the url that you are linking to ...

Just try again, I am sure you will get it ...

No LadyEye, the hand is still not showing and I typed the link in correctly. I typed in the link...... "http://www.interspeciesconflictvideos.com/page2.html".

I can retrieve that page via that url ... however, I cannot retrieve you index page ... Have you published an index page, doesn't seems so ... what page did you insert the url, so we can have a look .....

heres a very useful link I found doing a Google search hyper linking is your best bet in blogging especially," in most case when you editing a blog or a forum, use your hyper link option like I did here

All I seem to get when clicking that link is the directory to your files you have uploaded.

Have you actually, named, saved and published a page as index

all small letter, no spaces, only as index

??

And from what page were you having the trouble with linking ....

If you publish your index page and then provide the name of the page that you were having trouble with the linking we could check into this for you ...

It is the text at the bottom, where it says "for more movies click here" and yes I have done everything right.

It appears to me by viewing the source code that the link did not take ... as the http etc. is not showing up on your code for that page ....

I would suggest doing it again.

Highlighting the entire text that you want to link ... going up to your toolbar to insert, insert link, (be certain the box is http) and type in the url of the page you are linking to ....http://www.yourdomainname.com/pagetolink.html

Tygra, You need to tell us how you are putting the link in - step by step - because it appears that you aren't understanding the directions LadyEye is giving you. Give us what you did - and we'll be able to tell you how to fix it.

Ok Bethers/ladyeye, I wrote the text and double clicked on so the hyperlink icon would show up. The hyperlink box then appeared, and I typed in the URL bar http://www.interspeciesconflictvideos.com/page2.html

Hi Tygra ... so sorry you are having such troubles happening here ...

but I notice a few things ...

Your domain url is http://www.interspeciesconflictvideos.com

I notice when you click on that page, we are seeing only your index files.

You need to republish your index page again, this being your main page or the landing page -
the index page is not showing up .. so that is one problem you need to correct ....

You are trying to link to this page http://www.interspeciesconflictvideos.com/page2.html

from this page http://www.interspeciesconflictvideo...ictvideos.html

So if you have highlighted the text and inserted the manner in which you described, you have done things correctly, but perhaps you just may not have republished the page, to your public_html directory, because the link is not showing up as you have described, not even in the source code on the page ... try just linking the words click here instead of the entire sentence and republish the page and see what happens.

Thanks for all your help LadyEye, when you say the index page, do you mean the very first page that you would create?

I tried republishing with what you said "click here", but still the hand does not show up when you go over the link.

I asked for every step you take - so if you gave me every step, I've found the problem.

Highlight the text
Click on the Navigation Icon
Put in the url for that text
Go down and click on OK

If you haven't been clicking on ok, and have been closing the window with the x, you lose what you did every time.

I have done everything you have said Bethers and still no joy. Anyway, it should not matter if you have not typed the link in correctly, or even if you have not typed a link in at all, the hand should still appear when you go over the text. I know this when I was first creating hyperlinks, and I used to the navigation bar on the left toolbar, even with no link when I went over it the hand appeared.

Here's what I'll do - you send me that page - tell me exactly what you want linked and what it is to link to - and I'll look at the page and see if it's done properly.

You can send it as an attachment to beth @ moxie-enter-prises.com (withouth the spaces).

Since your index page is again not published properly - I think you are missing steps on much of the process.

I'm not going to keep guessing what you are or aren't doing - You send me the page that you say has the link on it but isn't displaying it - and i'll look at it.

Ok, I have sent it again, I dont know why you did not recieve it before.

If http://www.interspeciesconflictvideos.com/ is your root directory then for the index page to show correctly you need to save the index page i.e. the page you want people to see when they go to the domain www.interspeciesconflictvideos.com you need to save it as index.html. this way when the go to http://www.interspeciesconflictvideos.com they will get directed to your main page instead of getting an index of items in you root which is what we get now. See for yourself by clicking here. Once you have done this then i believe the linking procedure should work better for you.

I've just looked at the source code for your so called index page here and i can tell you now that the text is not linked in anyway so i can only presume you have not done this correctly. the code you have is

this has no reference to linking at all so will obviously only show the text you have input. I would go back over what ladyeye and bethers have been telling you or take a look at the excellent tutorials that vodahost provides here which will take you step by step through the linking process. Also i would suggest making your pages narrower as they are too wide at the moment and are forcing people to side scroll to see your content and this turns people away from your site.

Exactly Mook, it's great you chimed in, to reconfirm everything Bethers and I have been trying to point out to Tygra. Reassurance from further members of this forum, on a particular problem or topic, is what makes Vodaland such a unique, fabulous place, not to mention what makes your "website" go round!

Ok Mook, I understand what you ar saying now, save my main page as "index.html" What I dont understand is that the the other links are working, you know where is says "movie 1 "etc.

The annoying thing is I will have to redo my main page all over agan, as when you remane the page it says it might be usuable.

Well, I also don't know what you're doing if you are actually sending me the page in an email - as I have not received anything from you.

In your address do you use the hyphens?, if you do I dont know what's going on then.

yes you need the dashes. All you need to do is not have the spaces I put in. You can always navigate to my moxie enterprises link and use the link there to email me if that will work better for you.

All i would do is make a copy of the .html page you have as your index page at present then just rename one of those copies to index.html. yes yo may have to redirect the links to the new index page but isn't it better to have a website that people can use rather than one we can't?
Also if you want traffic to be passed your way by the search engines you will have to rename the index page as index.html as this is what the search engines look for

Mook - se's could care less if you name the page index or not - that's just for the way the html is set up for publishing.

Beth is right, the SE care less what you name your page except for the relevancy of what you have on it. You dont type INDEX stuff on it anyway.. Index is so when u type in www.yoursite.com the domain server grabs it and shows it and typically index is your home page.

Tygra - yes - the very first page that you create, the page that you would like people to come to when they type in your url

Go into your blue voda web builder, and find that very first page and open it again, then save that page as index, publish it as index and then we will be able to click on your url and see your very first page ... as it is now you still have not made that happen ...

You do not add anything else to this page for publishing .... only name, save and publish as index

Also, like I said when you try to rename the page it says the page might be unsuable.

Let's hope it is simply that you are not understanding, because to be honest with you, with all the help myself, Bethers and Mook have provided for you you are still not getting it ... Please read through this entirely, I am hoping to make you understand.

It is hoped or your intentions should be that Users on the internet looking for videos that match your descriptions will be drawn to your website by your domain name ...

Now if you click on that link, you will see nothing but page files ....
do that now - click on that link I just typed there ...

Now what do you see, do you see just text showing the names of your files? That is what I see ... Do you want people that may visit your website to see that? I will answer that question - NO, you do not.

To eliminate that page from being seen when someone types in their address bar, your domain name, or is directed to your site from another source, YOU NEED TO NAME, SAVE AND PUBLISH A MAIN PAGE AS
index

Now if you are having problems with changing that main page ....

Please simply make another .....

Name it, Save it, Publish it as index


You have not yet applied the proper technique to the words you wish to link.

To link text to a certain other page ... you must highlight the text, go to insert, insert link, be certain the box says http://www.interspeciesconflictvideos.com/page2.html

and then save it and republish that page ....

THIS WILL WORK ONLY IF YOU FOLLOW THROUGH WITH ALL OF THE ABOVE.

BE CERTAIN YOU ARE PUBLISHING TO YOUR IP ADDRESS, WITH YOUR CORRECT USERNAME AND PASSWORD AND TO THE DIRECTORY public_html

One more thing - the reason we can see the other page is because you have published it correctly and that page is named, saved and published as interspeciesconflictvideospage2

Nothing else, simply has been named, saved and published as interspeciesconflictvideospage2

I believe perhaps this is where you are going wrong ... you are using the name interspeciesconflictvideos in your page naming .... you do not have to do that ... that is your domain name ... you do use those words when applying links, but not when naming, saving and publishing your page ....

Right, I have saved my page as "index". I did get what you were saying, I just could'nt understand how the links for movie 1, movie 2 etc were working with the way I was doing things, and the one for the text was not. Anyway, thankyou so much for all your help.

Tygra .... Great Job!! I see your index page ...

Now in answer to your last question, the one highlighted in red above.

The reason the links for movie 1, movie 2 work differently that the text link is it is a different style of navigation, navigation meaning directory to and from all of your other pages. Tex or nav bar ... inserting the links for these two different syles requires a different method ...

For the nav bar ... you double click the buttons you have selected, which by the way, here are many styles to choose from in it's drop down menu)
and the pop up box comes up automatically for you ...

With Text Linking - you need to actually perform another step, and that step starting with 1) highlighting the word, go to your top menu bar and choose insert, then you will choose link, and there you will see the pop up box, which is actually larger, for you to type in the address or commonly known as the url for the page ....

Now you might be able to try that linking again, your index page is now showing, good job

You should also read the post made here by Mook about the size adjustments needed on your pages ... Mook offers solid advice to listen to there.

You'll see there is so much to learn as you go with Voda, if you are like the rest of us, you'll be making changes steady, great fun though!!

Also, I dont see what's wrong with my page measurements, the bar at the bottom only goes along about 1 cm extra.

EDIT: I think I know why you are saying about my measurements, I am using a higher screen resolution.

Your page width should be somewhere between 800 and 1000, so that the most possible viewers can look at your site without having to sidescroll.

I got this email and emailed you back twice. I figured out why I probably didn't get the others - as they were from yousendit and looked like total spam - I probably deleted them - without looking at them further until you told me you sent through there.

And for everyone to know - he can't highlight that text, because he's putting in BANNERS which are IMAGES, not text in TEXT ELEMENTS.

So - we've all been right and you need to make changes and use text if you want it to become links and for search engines to see it.
