Default self , blank, parent, top

What do self, blank, parent and top actually do for the page when it opens?
Does self means the page opens in a new page or within the page you are viewing or is that parent?
When I set a page to blank it seams to open within the page I'm viewing and not a page by itself. So if I open three pages, three tabs are open at the same time.

What is the setting to use if I want my pages to open with only the new page visable and closing the original as to not have multiple pages open?

Leaving the target area empty or self will open the page in the same window. Blank will open a new (blank) page. I will let someone else explain parent and top, as I have only a vague knowledge of them.
