Thread: Linking to sub folder

Hi, Im hoping some one can help me here. I have the bones of my web site published and now I am trying to create a members only area. The site is nb-hollinhurst.com and the page I am stuck on is
http://nb-hollinhurst.com/owners_area.html On the right hand side there are more nav buttons to go to a sub folder I have named "owners". I have also password protected this folder. What I cant figure out is how I write the URL in the nav box to take the member in to this area. Do I go "nb-hollinhurst.com/owners/index.html" or is the route via "public_html ". also is there a quick and easy way of finding the URL once you have published, so that all you have to do is copy it in to the nav box. hope this clear what I need,and thanks in advance for any help.

http://nb-hollinhurst.com/owners is your sub dir

http://nb-hollinhurst.com/owners/pagename.html
is the full path to any page in your sub directory

Hi thanks for replying,I am still having trouble because when I try and publish to "http:// nb-hollinhurst.com/owners/pagename" it comes up with an error notice. would this be because I have password protected it? Also when I publish to "public_html/owners" it publishes, but when I click on a button on the right, it can't find the page. bit lost now! M.

If I have read your last post correctly, you are trying to publish to
"http:// nb-hollinhurst.com/owners/pagename"

When you publish a page to owners sub dir
just add /owners to the popup box at the bottom...

ie..... public_html/owners

Hi again, I have done all that you have said, and I click on the button and it just goes to a page that says that the page could not be found. I know I am missing something quite simple, so please , if you know what I am doing wrong, please tell me. Thanks. M.

Take off the password protect on your sub directory and lets start again.

I can see all your pages but I cannot see an index.html in your sub dir owners.

How did you create the sub directory "owners" ??

I can't even see an "owners" folder...

Mickey, go into your Cpanel and create the sub directory
"owners"

without the quotes...............

Hi, I created the file "owners" in the control panel, under sub domains. if I go into Blue FTP I can see the two folders, "nb-hollinhurst" and the other folder "owners". The idea is that the public can read the pages in "nb-hollinhurst" and the members will be able to click on the picture on the "owners_area" page in the "nb-hollinhurst" folder and pass into the"owners" folder which will be password protected. I have named the frount page in the "owners" folder "index" which I think I should do. I am hoping that this will work like a sub site in "nb-hollinhurst.com".Thats the plan anyway.
I can publish the pages to the "owners" folder, but I can't seem to link the sub pages together. I have tried nb-hollinhurst.com/owners/pagename, I have tried public-htlm/owners andmany more combanations. I guess that I have not hit on the right one. any help would be great as I am now a bit lost what to try now. Thanks M.

No prob mickey, its that sometimes people type in exactly what they see
hence the no quotes part......

Now, goto: http://owners.nb-hollinhurst.com/
and you can see your index page......welcome to the owners only area

All your other nav buttons for members only should go to your sub dir index page as above.

One last question, the other pages in the owners folder,to link to them in this folder do I use http://owners.nb-hollinhurst.com/pagename, or should it go to public_html/owners/pagename. Also, do I have to have the password protection of to publish to this folder. Thanks. M.

Dont get confused between publishing....public_html
and linking your pages..............
What you have now is your public dir(where most of your files/pages are stored..........
AND a protected sub dir with your index page.

All your nav buttons (I would only have 1)that point to your protected area (owners) should go to
your sub dir index page........then a fresh set of nav buttons on your protected index page will then point to the other pages in your protected area.

On the question of publishing to your protected area:

Your main password gives you access rights to your Main directory and
ALL sub directories.

Hope thats a little clearer...............

So what you are saying is that all the other pages that I want to protect should be published out side the owners folder, and the index page inside the folder. The index would then be protected with the nav buttons pointing to the pages which are outside. I have published all the pages to the owners folder, should I now delete them and republish in the nb-hollinhurst folder. Sorry for being a bit slow here, but are they safe outside of the protected folder? M.

I still can't seem to understand what you have done. You have probably set the "owners" folder as subdomain of "nb-hollinburst.com", but the folder "owners" is not a subfolder of "nb-hollinburst" ?
Is "nb-hollinburst.com" the main domain of your account, or is it an addon domain of some other main account ?

This is what I wrote above:

keep all your Protected pages in your owners sub directory......

Your owners index will then point to the other pages in your owners dir.....

ie. your owners index page will have one of these buttons with
http://nb-hollinhurst.com/owners/contact.html
and so on for all your nav buttons ON YOUR OWNERS INDEX page.

There is no nb-hollinhurst.com/owners folder. Or at least i can't find it. That's why i keep asking you if nb-hollinhurst.com is the main domain or an addon domain.

David, i understang that he's using a subdomain, BUT, there is no nb-hollinhurst/owners folder. It there was one, and with an "index" page published, it should also be coming up typing www.nb-hollinhurst.com/owners/index.html . It doesn't. So my guess is that he has the "owners" folder at the same level of his nb-hollinhurst folder (Mickey said he has such a folder in his post #18. So my guess is that nb-hollinhurst is an addon domain, not the main domain, and that's why he has also a "nb-hollinhurst" folder as well as a "owners" folder

but it would seem that mickey has been trying different things
so the files are not indicative of the true state at this moment.

All his required pages are there and now that his user/password screen
is working, he just needs to republish to owners.nb-hollinhurst.com
to get what he wants......as long as the links from his owners index are
setup properly........

Thanks David for your help I think I have got it all working now. Sorry Navel for not coming back to you sooner. Yes nb-hollinhurst is an add on domain, which was making it harder for me to work out. I should of said this earlier but I have not got it quite clear in brain the structure of web design. Getting there slowly though. Once again thanks for your help. M.
