I am not sure what you mean. Please clarify.
My website consists of businesses of all types. Free advertisement if you will. I want to have different types of business wether home-based, ecommerce, computers, electronics, apparel, sports, etc. Each different types of business e.g. outdoors will have it's own page and music on another but as of now I am looking into getting started on each page with businesses that fall under that category. You said I can get penalized. I definitely do not want that so please explain what is the best route I should go about doing this that won't cost an arm and a leg lol. Thank you.

Oh.....OK.....then you should have posted in the Advertising Forum rather than the Link Exchange, since a Link Exchange is when people swap links to build traffic ("you put my banner on your site, and I put your banner on mine" : reciprocol links). This might make my earlier post easier to understand with this explanation, right?

If you are just going to have a lot of 'free' listings all nice and neatly organized, you can still create a negative impact for your site if you have a perponderance of outbound one-way links ...... you will need to still balance the number of your links with some good 'hard' content building and pre-SEO work to build within the current accepted manner.

Ok I see my downfall on my post and should have clarified myself onto what my objective was.
Ok I believe I know what your saying on hard content building e.g. like if I had a page that dealt with website designing, then I have links as well as banners on that page and like bv for instance saying that "build your own website" and the experience I went through on building a site.....something like that right?

I still dont get the link exchange thing. I mean why are you suposed to send people away from your site to your competion and them send their business to you. what am I missing here? by the way, I do have reciprocal links on my site, but still dont get it. also I find a lot of people wanting to link to my site and when I go to their site I cant even find the place where my link would be and I'm sure no one else would find it either.

The point of link trades is providing a resource to your customers, as well as links pointing to you. The more links pointing to you, the more roads there are to you for people to follow.

How is it a resource: well lets suppose im searching for an item or service in broad terms to get an idea of expense. I come upon your site like what i see but im not ready to buy. I want to compare prices, shop around etc.. but wait.. you have this resource right here handy for me to use.. so i look around, and now yours looks pretty good compared to others and when i close out the links.. your page is still there underneath.. (outbound links should be target =blank open in a new window) Now im ready to buy .. and your site is here ..

What if you dont have what i want specifically.. well you still have value because youve provided me with a resource to get me where i need to be, hence better pr rank etc.

Keep in mind you dont have to link to competitors per se.. but at least RELATED products or services.

I get alot of traffic from my link trades

Hi lawn. Well its not so much as competitive for me as of yet. My website will mainly consist around small businesses and advertisement service for viewers who look for something particular you know something like the yellow pages. I understand what you are saying though on that but I have nothing to sell at the time. As for link exchanges it's more or less "scratch my back, i'll scratch yours." When you just starting out you want to be recognized and get yourself out there to generate visitors to your site. That is my goal is to get visitors at this time.

As far as the competition is concerned if you are selling the same thing your competition is then it won't really be the best of interest to swap links. I see some websites that only list links under the title "links" and they are normally at the bottom of the page lol but it's free and someone will eventually find it.
