  • Does Google differentiate between .com, .net, etc.

Does Google (specifically the Google bot) take .net, .info, etc. domains as seriously as .com domains and rate them accordingly? Why do the .com names go first?

Re: Does Google differentiate between .com, .net, etc.

Here's a pretty useful commentary to bring you up to speed somewhat on the differences between extensions:

If you're planning to register a domain name, the first domain extension you'd probably consider is the .com. Over 70% domain names are dot coms, regardless of whether they are commercial entities or not, because this type of domain extension is the most popular and memorable.

Although the first option of people registering for domain names is to go with top-level .com, many people don't realize that there are other domain extensions that they can use for domains. For instance, if you're setting up an online business, .biz would be most appropriate for you. However, if you simply want to develop a personal website, a .name, which is restricted to individuals, is the best choice for you.

Some domain extensions, such as .com, .net and .org, have no limitations. Meaning, anyone in any kind of industry has the right to register these types of domain extensions. On the other hand, several domain names are reserved for particular communities and organizations. Domain names that end in .aero are reserved only for global aviation communities, while .travel are used by businesses, organizations and government activities involved in the travel industry.

Domain extensions also work for specific industries, such as mobile products and services (.mobi), television and entertainment industries (.tv), museums and individuals related to the museum industry (.museum) and human resource management (.jobs).

Learn about the most appropriate domain name before settling on a dot com. Distinguish the types of domain extensions that are available for public use and which domains are exclusively for a group of people. Understand the difference between top-level domains, country domain names and premium domains.

Although many people choose .coms above any other domain extensions, your .biz, .museum, .name, .aero, .jobs, .net, .org, .travel, or .tv could become a valuable investment someday. Know your options before you decide.

Reply To Same Question from "Google Answers":
There is no penalty for .com vs .net registration, except in word-of-mouth, i.e., if you tell everybody "you have to go to mysite.net", some of them will forget and type "mysite.com."

I have my own thoughts, but they are (typically) overly-complicated, and probably won't benefit you much at this point I'm afraid!
