  • Disability access

I have just been speaking to a friend who is a web site designer and after trawling my new web site (www.howcan.info) he said that my web site is illegal in the UK because it does not contain disability access. I had no idea I needed it, but how can I access and install this facility or is it not available on BV?

    Re: Disability access

LOL.. ummm.. Steve? This guy is full of ****.

Good text navigation, good alt tags on your images, so that speach readers can pick it up is all you need.. good text content, tell your story..

(another reason to stay off the flash)

No such thing as disability access on a web site. Ok .. I take that back cuz im sure SOMEONE will come back to try to kick me...

There are tags like your alt tags etc that are designed SPECIFICALLY for that.. but are misued... title tags for links etc.. but.. i would design my site to be USER FRIENDLY In general first before i jumped thru additional hoops and ... your basics should already BE THERE>

Most of this hoopla is about sites like Priceline, and i think there was an Olympics site..that got sued because of all the pop up impossible to keep up with even if you arent handicapped sometimes.. type sites.

      Hi Karen

I believe this disability access requirement is something specifically relating to the UK, would you know where I can get this checked as to fact or fiction?

        google....................website disability access uk

        Discrimination Act (DDA) state?

Part III of the DDA refers to the provision of goods, facilities and services. The Code of Practice which specifically mentions websites, can be downloaded in its entirety from the Equality and Human Rights Commission website.

The relevant quotes from the 175-page Code of Practice are:
2.2 (p7): “The Disability Discrimination Act makes it unlawful for a service provider to discriminate against a disabled person by refusing to provide any service which it provides to members of the public.”
4.7 (p39): “From 1st October 1999 a service provider has to take reasonable steps to change a practice which makes it unreasonably difficult for disabled people to make use of its services.”
2.13 - 2.17 (p11-13): “What services are affected by the Disability Discrimination Act? An airline company provides a flight reservation and booking service to the public on its website. This is a provision of a service and is subject to the act.”
5.23 (p71): “For people with visual impairments, the range of auxiliary aids or services which it might be reasonable to provide to ensure that services are accessible might include ... accessible websites.”
5.26 (p6: “For people with hearing disabilities, the range of auxiliary aids or services which it might be reasonable to provide to ensure that services are accessible might include ... accessible websites.”
        Have fun

          Hi David

Well thank you for that David, you clearly know the Google criteria, but do you have any suggestions on how I comply with this. Is there some add on software I can use? Any suggestions?

            Re: Disability access

Thats what im trying to tell you.. theres no real addon software. addon features maybe.. javascripts to make the print bigger, but you need to make the alt tags and coding and text links etc to make it understood more clearly by speach readers etc
