Hello to the group,
Does anyone know of a free or low cost shopping cart that offers an instant download for purchases. For example, if I sell my ebook or audio files I would like the client to get an instant email with a link to their purchase.
I think MAL has a 50 product limit. Does anyone know of any others?
Ebay calls them digital downloads and they seem to sell well.
Does Soho do this?

Yes you can create a product download with soho, or oscommerce or just about ANY cart out there I believe. I dont know the particulars, but ive read and seen it mentioned while learning to do other things. In the product setup of soho, theres an 'enable download' when this item is purchased. So Im positive it can be done.

I believe Mal's ecommerce the download option too (though I'm still trying to figure them out for myself...).

Yes, the digital download segment is in the "edit product" of Soho. Don't know about BV. My question for this particular post is how to prevent user from observing the link to the file download, and explore for him/herself the rest of that particular folder. I have not experimented with the Soho digital download yet, so am unfamiliar with exactly how it works. Any experience here guys?

It would take some work, but.. I think you could put each download in its own folder so they couldnt get anything but that particular file. Now.. 100 downloads would be time consuming, and there may be a script that prevents it easier, but I would think that would work.

Actually.. Im thinking.. GEE THANKS... that there is a script that enacts a COOKIE that you can install .. dunt know HOW easy, but i know its out there that allows them to only access the folder by that cookie for like 24 hours!

I'll go out on a limb here, where exactly would you create all these numerous folders? I would go into file manager in CPanel, but where should I put them?

I guess I could create one single folder outside of the public_html folder, and then insert a seperate "randomly generated" folder name for them to access...each folder has it's own seperate password??

This leads to my next question in Soho shopping cart. How do you add a secured file password to it (the digital download)? I didn't see that option in the dropdown menu.

I guess this is turning into a crackZ or WareZ question now.

This seems diabolical, and I'm now looking at DLMan, and outside-soho-programs to manage this. Which means integration between Soho and "the digital download service/software" will need to be fixed.

The more softwares, addons, and services you try and use, the larger the potential problems you could incur.

Now why didn't I just stick with the "personal webpage idea"?

Right now I'm trying to solve my FTP problem.

Well, if you got the cookie script, i think you could attatch it to the mail that generates from soho for the order along with the link. Id have to create a download for that to try it.. and its NOT your lucky day!

hahahaha You're sneaky. Cookie attatchments to emails? Of coures I'm SURE it's been done before....

I'm not so sure that only allowing one download is really that important. Technically, once they have the download, they can redistribute it. So, having the same person able to download it multiple times is sortof a moot point.

I think the easiest way to prevent major hackzors from getting a foothold is to go with what you suggest, if you're selling individual downloads, then create seperate folders for each one, password protect them, and then just change passwords every so often, depending on your site traffic. AWStats is great for this in CPanel. If all of a sudden you see a bunch of downloads hitting from one particular site, follow the link back and you'll see what's going on. Fix it by changing the password for the file, or move the file to a different location.

Give 'em the old 404, if you know what I mean.

I was looking for the same thing and came across My Digital Dispatch, it is a software that is very easy to use and they install the software for you if you cant do it yourself. I purchased this software and it was very easy to list all my inventory and items for sale. This works perfectly with ebay or your website. Unfortunately I found out to late that this version does not support shopping cart but that the next version that will be released next week will support shopping cart as well.

So maybe this is a program you are looking for.

I'm going to use Mals service. What I've done is make a new page in BV for each download with a long, complicated name. Publish each one. Then list each product in the download section of Mals Kart which gives them the address of the download they're purchased when the payment is confirmed. Mals also has a link for another firm which will manage unlimited downloads for you for a yearly fee. If you have lots that could be forth while. I might look into them myself later.
