External USB Drives being shred over WAN

I just added an external USB drive and partitioned it to several virtual drives. I went on the desktop it is connected to (running XP Home) and enabled sharing for one of the virtual drives. I then went to my laptop and found it was not visible under "My Computer". I have had no problems sharing folders from my desktop to my laptop, so I was a bit suprised. Anyone experience the same thing or can offer a solution?
